KDX is a program in BETA. This means, the program isn't officially released to the public yet, however, it is available to the public to test. This would imply that the public that understand the program enough to install it without documentation should be the only ones using the product. However, even the best of us get stumped on things once and a while, and most of us will miss out on some of the key features of the product by finding things out ourselves. The basic setup of KDX may be like no other program you have ever used before. This section will explain in detail everything; from the basics of connecting to a server, and how servers work, as well as using Sound Sets, Icon Lists, and Color Schemes in KDX, to the Shortcut Keys in the program, and advanced features. Contents ● Installing KDX ● Configuring KDX ❍ Setting your name and colors ❍ Setting your user Icon ❍ Adding Sound (Sound Lists) ❍ Changing the icons in KDX (Icon Sets) ❍ Changing KDX's Appearance (Color Schemes) ● Trackers - What are they, and how do I use them? ● Servers ❍ Introduction to the KDX Community ❍ Uploading to and Downloading from servers ● Frequently Asked Questions Installing KDX Download the program. Once downloaded, extract the files [using an extrator such as Winzip (for PC users), or Stuffit (for Mac users)] into a folder, and open the KDX Client application. Back to Contents Configuring KDX There are many settings that may be made to KDX, to customize it to your preference. First and most importantly, is your user name. This will give users something to recognize you by... an "online alias", or your real name; the choice is up to you. To start, open the KDX client, and click the "Settings" button (shown in red on the right). Back to Contents Name and Colors Once you have the settings window open, you can start putting in the data requested: Your name, and a brief description of yourself- perhaps your current status (this will show up next to your name in the user list). The Foreground colo…

KeyKit − Musical Fun with Windows, Tasks, and Objects Tutorial for Version 6.5a Tim Thompson AT&T San Jose, California tjt@nosuch.com Introduction KeyKit is a programming language and graphical interface for manipulating and generating music. This tutorial covers the basics of using its multi-window graphic interface, which is completely implemented by a user-accessible library of code written in the KeyKit language. A detailed language reference manual is contained in another docu- ment, but you don’t have to read it right away since the graphic interface is complete enough to use without having to understand the underlying language. User-extensibility is a primary motivation behind the system, however, so if you become an active user, you should at least peruse some of the code in the user-defined library to see if you might be interested in adding features of your own to the system. KeyKit is supported on a variety of computers. You should obtain installation instructions when you receive the KeyKit executables. The most widely accessible version runs under Windows 95 and Windows NT, so some details in this tutorial will be tailored to that version. In general, though, the user interface acts identically on all systems, including the behavior of pop-up menus and window manipulation. An Initial Test Start KeyKit (for example, under Windows, double-click the keykit icon in the Program Manager). A large white window should appear, and after a few seconds you should see a box at the bottom containing a key> prompt. This box is the Console, and contains an interpreter that will read and execute KeyKit statements. Type print(44) and it should print 44 followed by another key> prompt. Type and you should hear that 5-note phrase played on your MIDI output device. Press a few notes on your MIDI input device, and then type print(sizeof(Recorded)). You should see some number other than 0, and if you play more notes and type the same statement, the number should increase. You’ve now verified that MIDI input and output are working. The default behaviour of KeyKit is to echo all MIDI input directly to MIDI output. This is appropriate when you have your keyboard controller plugged directly into the MIDI input of your PC, and your MIDI output directly drives your synths (or your soundcard). If you have your MIDI routing set up so that your controller is already send- ing its output to your synths, then your synths will be getting two copies of each note (which may not be immedi- ately obvious except for a slight chorus effect in the sound). To disable KeyKit’s echoing of MIDI input, you should execute Merge=0 , by typing it in the Console window. You can make this change permanent by modi…

Smalltalk-80™ for the Macintosh™ 0.4 Release Note June 9, 1987 Overview: The main purpose for the 0.4 release is to provide a Smalltalk: that runs well on the Macintosh SE and Macintosh II (as well as the Macintosh Plus and other Macintosh models with at least one Megabyte of RAM). Since Smalltalk is implemented using some non-standard techniques, a few changes had to be made to Smalltalk 0.3 to make it work on the new machines. While we were making these changes we fixed a few other bugs and added several features. The Smalltalk 0.3 documentation still applies except as noted in this release note. Warning: Images and the interpreter from this release are not compatible with those from version 0.3 or earlier versions. Any work you want to move between 0.3 or earlier Smalltalk versions and this 0.4 Smalltalk release must be moved via file-ins. Note: You must run with version 4.1 or greater of the System file. System 4.1 is provided with the release. This does not apply to the Macintosh XL; however, on the Macintosh XL you should be able to run with System 3.2 (which you were probably using already). Installing the release: In general, follow the directions in the Smalltalk 0.3 manual except as noted below. If you do not have an up-to-date system (System file 4.1 or greater) on your hard disk, boot from Smalltalk Disk 1 and move the System file and Finder from Smalltalk Disk 1 into your System Folder. If you wish to preserve the fonts and desk accessories in your old System file you should use the Installer to install System 4.1. If you already have the 0.3 Smalltalk:-80.sources you don't need new ones (they have not changed for 0.4). If you don't already have the sources, use DivJoin to join the Smalltalk: sources on Smalltalk: Disk 3 and Smalltalk Disk 4. The Smalltalk sources must be placed either in your root directory or in the directory where you will run Smalltalk. If you plan on running Smalltalk from more than one directory, place the sources in the root. To install this release on a Macintosh XL, you will have to move the files to single-sided disks before the Macintosh XL can read them. To do this, you will have to join the larger files using a Macintosh with 800K drives then divide them again onto single sided disks. Differences for Installation on a hard disk: (refer to pages 3-4 of the 0.3 manual) 1. Smalltalk-80.sources is now a two part file on Disks 3 & 4. It used to be a four part file. You will still have to join th~ file. 2. You no longer have to join Smalltalk.image. It is now a complete file on Disk 2. Differences for Installation without a hard disk: (refer to pages 4-6 of the 0.3 manual ) I. Most of the process described in the 0.3 release notes tells you how to create two double sided disks named System and Work. The configuration in which Smalltalk 0.4 is shipped on double sided …
