The Wayback Machine - http://web.archive.org/web/19980212205344/http://www.stalker.com:80/po… Installing PortShare Pro Place the PortShare Pro control panel into the Control Panels folder on your disk. If you have the ARA (Apple Remote Access)AND/OR Open Tranport software running on this machine, place the PortShare Task background application into the Extensions folder (you do not need this file if ARA is not installed): Restart your computer. When the MacOS system loads, PortShare Pro displays its icon on the bottom of the screen. To share a device connected to some computer, open the PortShare Pro control panel there, select the serial port to share, click the Shared button and give the shared device some network name: Any number of serial ports can be made shared on each computer. To access a shared device from some other computer, open the PortShare Pro control panel on that computer and click the New button. Enter the name for the additional port you want to create (let's say Remote Modem) and click the Create button: When a virtual port is created, you can configure it. The list on the right side of the PortShare Pro control panel shows all the shared devices on your network. Select the device you want to use: To have simultaneous access to several shared devices, you may want to create several virtual ports. Open a communication application on the computer with the virtual port created. Open a communication settings window: it should contain a list or a pop-up menu of the serial ports available. Select the virtual port you have created: PortShare is a trademarkis a trademark of STALKER SOFTWARE, INC.

The PortShare(tm) Pro software enables your Macintosh to share serial communication ports and the serial devices (modems, printers, etc.) with other Macintosh computers connected to your network. The PortShare Pro can run only under System 7.0 and better, but it can communicate with PortShare Lite installed on computers running System 6 or System 7. -------------------------- Demo version ---------------------------------- This demo version of PortShare Pro has the session time limited to 2 minutes. The number of sessions is not limited. -------------------------- Installation Guide ---------------------------------- Installation (both clients and servers): 1. Place the PortShare Pro file into the "Control Panels" folder. Make sure that AppleTalk is on. 2. If the ARA and/or Open Transport software is installed on your computer, place the PortShareTask file into the "Extensions" folder. Without ARA or Open Transport installed this file is not required. 3. Restart the computer. On server computer(s) (i.e. on Macintosh computers with serial devices attached): 1. Open the PortShare Pro control panel. 2. Select the port you want to share in the left section of the panel. 3. Click the "Shared" box, enter the name for your device in the "Network Name:" field (for example, "Public Modem") 4. Repeat steps 2-3 for each port you want to make shared. 5. Close the control panel. On a Client computer: 1. Open the PortShare Pro control panel. 2. Click the New button to create a virtual port. 3. Select the "Virtual Modem" and click "Create". 4. Click OK. The icon for the virtual port created should appear in the left section of the PortShare Pro control panel. 5. Select a shared device name you want to use from the list in the right section of the panel. If your network has zones, a pop-up menu appears above the list. Select "AppleTalk Zones" from that menu to see zones. Select the zone with PortShare server you want to use and click Open. Select the shared port you want to use. 6. Repeat steps 2-5 if you want to create several virtual ports. 7. Close the control panel. When your communication port is being used by a network user, you can see his/her name in the "Status" field. Any Macintosh can operate as a PortShare Pro server and as a PortShare Pro client at the same time: when somebody is working with your ports, you can use modems/printers/etc attached to other computers. ---------------------- Commercial Version --------------------------- Stalker Software Inc. 655 Redwood Hwy, Ste. 275 Mill Valley, Cal 94941 1-800-262-4722 or 1-415-383-7164 Fax: 1-415-383-7461 e-mail: sales@stalker.com For a list distributors hit the "?" button in the control panel.
