INFO-MAC@SUMEX-AIM.Stanford.EDU is a network interest group for the Apple
Macintosh computer.  This list is SUMEX's contribution to the community of
research and instructional developers of the Macintosh.  We welcome all
submissions of messages and programs in this spirit.

The Info-Mac Digest is distributed via Internet mail to over 100 sites,
which then redistribute it to individual addresses.  This hierarchical
method makes the mail load manageable for the SUMEX host.  To receive the
digest, check with your system bboard manager and if they don't yet receive
it, then request a copy be sent to a local bboard address (e.g.
Info-Mac@HOST).

Other networks also have access to the digest.  Redistribution to CSNet
addresses is taken care of by INFO-MAC@RELAY.CS.NET and to BITNET by
INFO-MAC@ICSA.RICE.EDU.  Usenet receives a copy called comp.sys.mac.digest.

With FTP access as user "anonymous" and any password, you can bring the
archived files over to your host and download them to your Macintosh.

Submissions are scanned to filter out any list requests, pure speculation
or opinions, or messages not pertaining to the Macintosh.  Submissions for
the digest should be made directly to INFO-MAC@SUMEX-AIM.Stanford.Edu.

All requests to be added to this list, comments about operations, problems,
and administrative questions should be sent to the moderators at
INFO-MAC-REQUEST@SUMEX-AIM.Stanford.EDU.

Here are the extensions we use in this archive and their explanations:

<no extension>	-  directory
.txt		-  an ascii text file
.etx		-  an ascii text file in a particular format called
		   "structure-enhanced text". Browser programs can beautify
		   these files.
.abs		-  an ascii text file containing abstracts of the other files
		   in its directory
.hqx		-  an ascii text file which contains an image of a Macintosh
                   file. Use Binhex 4.0, StuffIt, Compact Pro, or a variety
		   of other utilities to convert these files from encoded text
		   into applications and documents.
		   StuffIt Expander is recommended to debinhex these files.
.bin		-  a binary image of a Macintosh file, in MacBinary format.
.shar		-  shell archive. Can be converted into text documents on
  		   a Unix system.
.uu		-  a uuencoded file which can be converted into a binary
                   file by running uudecode on a Unix system

Except for .bin files, these can all be transferred with ASCII mode FTP.

After the file has been transferred to your mac and converted from binhex,
you may see additional unfamiliar kinds of file. These are mainly archive
formats which allow files to be posted here in a compressed, more convenient
to manage form. Some common extensions are:

.cpt		-  Compact Pro archive (see /util)
.pit		-  PackIt II archive (obsolete). Deconvert with one of the
                   other archivers, using special menu items.
.sea		-  self-extracting archive, an application which creates new
                   files when run. No additional software is necessary.
.sit		-  StuffIt archive
SITD		-  actually a file type, this indicates Stuffit Deluxe

Viruses are an increasingly severe problem these days. Repositories of
public domain software often carry many infected programs. We don't want
this to happen to Info-Mac.

Unfortunately, although we do take steps to screen some programs before
they are made available in the archive, we cannot promise to screen
every program. As a volunteer staff, we have only limited resources.
Worse, even a close examination of each file could not reveal viruses
or other malicious software behaviors that were not known to the Macintosh
community.

So what do we do? Well, for one thing, we try hard to ensure that the programs
in the virus directory are free of *known* viruses. That means that you can
download and run virus-detection programs without undue fear of infection. We
recommend that you do this before submitting any software.

If you find a virus in one of Info-Mac's programs, tell us about it as soon
as you can (and use an URGENT subject line). That way we can remove it from
the archive right away.

For complete safety from known viruses, use the latest version of an
anti-virus tool such as Gatekeeper or a virus-detector such as Disinfectant.
There can be no guarantee of safety from unknown viruses.

We highly recommend that you maintain an active backup procedure to protect
yourself even in the event of a system crash or viral infection that
results in the loss of all or some of your data. Download and use all software
in this archive at your own risk.

To access binaries in the Info-Mac archive at an info-mac mirror, use your
machine's ftp program.  First select a mirror site to connect to; they
are listed in the same directory as this file, and called mirror-list.txt.
You can use either ftp or WWW access; choose a mirror site which has the
protocal listed.

The web access sites are fairly self explanitory, once you connect with your
browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer).

To access via ftp, use any ftp program (or www browser) to connect to the ftp
URL specified in the mirror-list.txt file. The account name is "anonymous"
and you should use your email address as the password, if requested.
You should be able to transfer binaries with a statement like
"get app/silly-paint.hqx" or by using the GUI interface of a Mac ftp client
program.

NOTE: Almost all files (even binaries) in the Info-Mac archive are in
text format, even though they may not be human-readable. Hence, a FTP
transfer using a text-only option, often called ASCII, should work in
all common cases.

Note that most archives have a limit to the number of users that can be
connected at any one time to improve the performance. They will usually
give you a message if your connection was rejected for this reason.

Here are some simple commands to move you around the directory structure.
This example assumes that you started in the /info-mac directory.
	cd app         # move into the app directory
	ls             # list the files there
        get planet.hqx # transfer a file to your computer
        cd ..          # move back up to the parent directory
        cd help        # and so on...

Most Info-Mac files are stored in BinHex 4.0 format.  We have adopted
the common practice of labeling such files with .hqx extensions.  To
take these files and use them on your Macintosh, you must first run
them through a program which will convert them from .hqx format into a
regular Macintosh file. On Unix systems, you can use the mcvert
program, stored as cmp/mcvert.shar. You can also do the conversion on
your Macintosh by using any of a number of utilities, including BinHex
4.0, StuffIt, or Compact Pro. We recommend using Compact Pro because
it is slightly more convenient and reliable than the other tools.
Note: do NOT use BinHex 5.0 as it is incompatible, for some very
brain-damaged reasons. Most modern WWW browsers and FTP clients will unpack
your downloaded files automatically.

Many of our files also have been compressed to save space. You'll know
that they have been when the file name after converting to Macintosh
format ends with a .sit, .cpt, .sea, or .pit extension. Here is a
table to help you with the reconstruction:

In summary, there are generally five steps to pulling .hqx files from our
archives:
	1. Transfer them to your computer with FTP.
	2. Transfer them to your Macintosh somehow.
        3. If necessary, put separate pieces together.
	4. Run a de-binhexing utility to convert the .hqx files into either
           real Macintosh files or compressed Macintosh files.
	5. If they are compressed, use the appropriate decompression
           program to decompress them.
People using Unix may be able to skip steps 3 and 4 by using the program
mcvert on their Unix system before transferring the program to their Macintosh.

If you don't already have BinHex 4.0, it would be easiest to get it
from a friend or user group. Or, if you know how to do an 8-bit binary
download, you can FTP it from us as cmp/binhex4.bin. Unfortunately, a
little bit of pulling yourself up by the bootstraps is required.
StuffIt Expander is a more modern and useful program which incoporates
the functionality of Binhex, while also decompressing files. It is
also available in cmp/ in both binary and binhexed forms.

A CD-ROM of the archives is commercially available from Pacific HiTech.

at 71175.3152@compuserve.com. The CD-ROM is approximately $45 including 
shipping and handling.

Please note that we cannot test software for reliability on all Macintosh
configurations. As the software in this archive is generally non-commercial,
it may be less reliable and more prone to crashes than you are used to.

We highly recommend that you maintain an active backup procedure to protect
yourself even in the event of a system crash that results in the loss of
some of your data. Download and use all software in this archive at your own
risk.

o We do not accept commercial announcements of products or services.
  We also do not accept password protected packages as we are not an appropriate
  distribution site for your profit making ventures. However, we welcome
  demonstration copies of all such products.

o Please do not submit materials that are sexually explicit or may otherwise be
  deemed as for adults only. The Info-Mac archive is NOT for adults only.

o Do not post files or messages to the Info-Mac Archive via comp.sys.mac.digest.
  it will cause you and us headaches -- FTP and email are much more reliable.

o Do not send your files to each of the different MacGifts addresses as they all
  point to the same distribution list. For example, files sent to
  macgifts@info-mac.org
  and to macgifts@umich will result in two copies arriving at Info-Mac and 
  at UMich. We will also automatically forward all files left in our FTP drop
  box to the rest of the MacGifts distribution list; so, please do not send
  files to MacGifts and also FTP it to us.

o Please do not include other complete programs within your submission. For
  example, there is no need to send BBEdit or Adobe Acrobat Reader again as we
  already have these programs at Info-Mac. A simple pointer to these already
  archived programs would be best.

o Whenever appropriate, please indicate the hardware requirements for submitted
  applications. For example, indicate if the program expects an FPU or the PPC
  processor.

o If you submit something and later decide to retract it (or replace it with
  another message), you must send a note to

  Do NOT mail to info-mac because we usually read that file in chronological
  order and will likely miss your subsequent correction.

o Please keep signatures to a minimum. Long ones are frustrating to those
  of us on slow modem connections! 80 characters is our preferred
  limit, although 160 characters is fine if the signature is just the facts.

o Please do not prepend [*] to your subject lines -- we will do that for you.

o To send us a binary, first compress and BinHex your file, and then write
  a text blurb to be put in the digests announcing your file. Send the text
  and the BinHexed file to us as ONE message, if at all possible.  Remember,
  use a compression program to help us save on disk space. Note that text files
  smaller than 32KB do not need to be compressed or binhexed. Also, please send
  only one attachment per email message. As some programs will automatically
  binhex or otherwise encode an attachment, please take care not to encode your
  files twice.

o Describe your binary posting accurately, but be concise. More detailed
  information belongs in a document included with your posting. We may edit
  descriptions longer than 20 lines, and we will certainly curtail those that
  are longer than 50 lines. Binaries that do not include a description
  will not be accepted in most cases.

o To submit a file greater than 800K, or to avoid submitting by (and
  segmenting for) email, send email describing the file to
  <mailto:archivist@info-mac.org> and upload it to
  <ftp://macgifts:macgifts@info-mac.org/>
  As with emailed submissions, non-text files must be binhexed.

o Please don't be cute with the "(This file must be converted with BinHex 4.0)"
  line. If you change the words, it messes up everyone's software.

o Use version numbers to keep binary updates in order. If you are posting
  a minor update to a very large file, consider using the UpdateMaker program
  (in /disk) to create a small update document instead of making people
  download the whole thing over again. However, if the resulting update
  file's size is a significant percentage of the size of the original,
  say over 25%, please just send a complete new package.

o Choose a name for your binary - the shorter, the better. This name should
  be the Subject: of your mailing. If it's not obvious, tell us which
  directory you think it should go in. And don't make the subject line
  too long; keep it less than 50 characters or so. If possible, also include
  a three to five word description in the subject line.

o Don't assume a reader is familiar with a binary.  Updates still
  should contain a short description of what a program does.

o Please post programs only if you feel they are of general benefit to
  the Macintosh community.  This will help reduce the load on our end.

o Check your binaries for problems before sending them.  Make sure that
  they are complete and virus-free. Use the latest version of Disinfectant to
  check for the known types of infection. Disinfectant is located in our vir/
  directory.

o If possible, specify whether your binary may be included on the
  commercially available CD-ROM of the archives. Contact us for further
  information about these CD-ROMs.

We encourage the establishment of Info-Mac Archive mirrors, both partial 
mirrors that carry a subset of the archive limited by date and/or 
directory, and full mirrors that carry a complete copy of the archive. 

Mirror sites can be either public or private, and mirror all or part of the
archive.  We currently estimate that dedicated bandwidth of only an ISDN line
is needed to service a mirror.
 
The full archive currently occupies about 5.4 GigaBytes of disk space, and 
partial mirror sites may allocate less as they see fit. The recommended 
minimum is around 500 megabytes.

We require mirror sites to register with us. Registered mirrors receive 
support that makes their regular update process easier, and can be reached 
by us when the need arises (which isn't very often).

You must USE THE MIRROR SITES, which are listed in
help/mirror-list.txt.  There are over 50, and they provide reliable
access, via many different means, to the archive.  Also, a CD-ROM
containing much of the archive is commercially available; see

have anonymous ftp enabled; only the mirror sites can connect to it. This
insures the mirrors will be up to date.

abbreviated for ease of repeated use. The descriptive names are 
capitalized so they will sort to the top of directory listings. Here
