Has anyone come accross one of these?

I went to collect a Power Macintosh 5300 from someone earlier, and when I got it home (which resulted in my arms and hands aching alot) and found out that instead of it being a 100MHz 5300, it is actually a Power Macintosh ONE/225, with a 225MHz processor. No wonder it was fast when I first switched it on and started using the installed OS9.1.

What does the badge on the front say? If it's a 5300 then it sounds like it's been upgraded with a 5500 board. Where are you getting "Power Macintosh ONE/225" from, the About This Mac box??

The label on the front says Power Macintosh ONE/225.

I don't know where the person who gave it to me got 5300 from, but he did get it out of a skip at school.

According to a few Google searches, the Power Macintosh ONE/225 was what the 5500/225 was labelled as in the UK educational market.

Those must be pretty scarce as that's the first time I've ever heard of them. Most of my Macs came out of school / college skips but I've never come across one of those before.

No wonder your arms were aching - those 5xxx machines weigh a ton!

I think you've got a keeper, there. I try to keep up with the UK Mac scene, even though I am in USA (I was planning to marry a British girl at one time) and I have never come across a mention of a ONE/225 before.

Interesting! I can't see I've seen one of those before, but now that I think about it, I do remember something along the lines of these. I also recognise the little purple and orange logo... though I can't remember where from...

I'd never heard of it either, so I did some Googling and stumbled across this:

I'm not going to vouch for teh accuracy of any of that information but given the evidence here, I'd imagine there is at least some truth in it...

The model number it has is M3046, which I think is the same as the model number for the 5300/5400/5500 (not sure which).

The sticker on the bottom says it was manufactured in 1998.

I would definitely hold on to that one. Especially if it was manufactured in 1998, which would make it one of the last 5xxx made.

I didn't check LEM, but I saw no mention of it in the 5500 page at everymac. That AOL page was the only mention I could find of it anywhere in my (admittedly less than comprensive) Google searches. Assuming the badge is genuine then it would definitely be a keeper as it does seem quite rare.

According to the files and names on the machine, it belonged to the Media Studies department at Dinnington Comp. Maybe I can ask the person who safe it from the recyclers to ask the department about it.

I am begining to like this machine, but I will probably have to get rid of it during the next few weeks as it was someone else who wanted it, and I was just collecting it so I could post it to him.

The fact that the label has a red 'X'-ish logo instead of an Apple makes me think the label is maybe NOT an Apple-original. (Unless someone else can confirm having seen ones with this logo.) Maybe a reseller upgraded it and made their own label?

There is likely to still be an Apple logo on the machine in the normal place for a 5xxx, just under the screen. Can you confirm this steve30?

I do recognize that purple and orange logo as well but I'm not sure where I've seen it before. I've got quite alot of old Apple educational documentation so it's probably in amongst that somewhere.

That's remarkably like the logo on the OLPC (now known as the XO)

Yes, there is definately an Apple logo underneath the monitor.

The company in question is Xemplar - this started as a co-operatinve Education program between Apple and Acorn, but when Acorn went bust (around 1998) it was re-absorbed by Apple as it's Education branch in the UK. My dad used to use Xemplar when he worked in Education, but mostly for Acorn stuff. I recognised the logo instantly

On a side note, my dad has a window ice-scraper that he was sent by Xemplar with a crass joke about clearing yourr Windows on it - very humourous

That would explain the strange logo then. Thanks.

I checked in the system profiler and it said the system is a Power Macintosh 5500.
