SCSI drives

I picked up an 18GB and 36GB Compaq 10k RPM UW-SCSI drive last weekend for $5 each.

Now to get off of my butt and install them in the Dell server to see how well they work.

It's awesome how cheap UW SCSI is now. A month ago I almost bought a lot of 5x 18GB 10k RPM drives for $20 shipped off ebay for my server. I didn't, however, decided to save the money.

well we got sata now which is starting to get in to its own ide is also starting to speed up and scsi is starting to show its age

Actually, SCSI is still heavily used in the server market, though IDE is really slipping up now, most new PCs only use it for the optical.

50 pin SCSI drives are getting more expensive, 68/80 pin (U40/80) are now getting dumped cheaply, and 68/80 pin (U160/320) are still in use, large capacity, and expensive.

Most if not all of the server drives are 80 pin SCSI and you need the correct adapter to use them on an older Mac (at reduced speed if the drive will sync down low enough).

Got an 18.2 GB 50 pin drive for 100 dkk (~20 usd) recently. Was quite chuffed... it's loud as, though..

Chuffed means what exactly?

I snagged a couple 10KRPM 9GB SCA drives ($5 each and look unused) earlier in the year, they are much quieter and cooler running then I expected. They currently are in a striped RAID in my 8600/300 Radius Videovision Telecast machine. Early 10K RPM drives would be loud and hot I bet.

So far I've mounted the 18GB in an external case with a ribbon cable going from the drive to the internal connector on an Adaptec A2W SCSI card. While it has a high pitch from it due to the rotation speed, it does not 'scream like a banshee'.

The 36GB will be tested later.
