Mac IIfx printer port dies

My IIfx has the printer port go down after it has been on for several minutes. The modem port is unaffected. Is it likely a motherboard problem? Is there a way to use the modem port to print? My powerbook 540c with system 8 has that option, but is system 7.01 on the IIfx I don't see it. [?]

I remember in the chooser, when you click on the printer, there's sometimes a set of radio buttons for Printer or Modem, or sometimes there's two icons, one is a phone and the other one is a printer, and you click the one you want. Maybe the IIfx has an old driver; copy the driver from the PowerBook to the IIfx and try again.
