Is this battery compatible with the 3400c? http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Rechargeable-LI-ION-Battery-M7318-NEW-p-16180.html

I'm very confused about the various PB G3s' diversity.

Mmh no. This is a Pismo or Lombard batterie. A 3400c Battery would look like the one on this page :

Any thoughts on how to replace without rebuilding? I won't be buying a dead battery with the machine unfortunately.

Is my 5300c battery case in theory the same size and shape? (Not the NIMH standard just the case)

Yes they are the same case . Would fit in a 3400c as per the Apple page you linked says.
