Found this thing sitting by someone's garbage bin and I went to their door to see if I could have it. Sure enough!
What it came with...
40B hard drive
256MB ram
Panther
What I did to it
512MB ram
Tiger
However the speakers have as light hiss to them(the original cool ball ones) and for the life of me I cannot get it to go away unless I put my hand over them.
thats one issue it has, the other is it was a bit dirty(some of the plastic is stained of some weird dirt), and the arm to hold the LCD is a little loose it won't stay in the spot you want it to sometimes.
Otherwise it's awesome.

An iMac G4 sitting by a trash can?!
Jeez. Nice score.

WHY GOD, WHY?!?!?
WHY GOD, WHY?!?!?
A trash can?! Man, that is awesome!
Yeah I thought I was dreaming.
Thats's a really nice find. Congrats!
Wow, what an impressive haul!
What screen size has it got, and what speed is it? Did you get any kb/mouse or other accessories with it?
iMac G4s are nice little computers, we've got some running Leopard pretty decently at the high school.
As for the speakers, you can always just unplug 'em, it should have an internal speaker, and while maybe not the "nicest" option, it should prevent it from buzzing.

Unbelievable!
No KB or Mouse, but when I asked the dude if they speakers and power cable were still around he gave them to me, and I guess I can deal with the hiss.
Read above or in my signature for specs.

I think I've had that dream once or twice.. only I'd never go up to the house and ask - what if they'd insisted it got recycled?Yeah I thought I was dreaming.
I'll do it for free, and if they still say no, take it anyways. }I think I've had that dream once or twice.. only I'd never go up to the house and ask - what if they'd insisted it got recycled?Yeah I thought I was dreaming.

I'm still trying to catch my breath.
Really, how fortunate you are.
I still think that the iMac G4 is one of the best looking Macs ever made, IMHO. Right up there with the TAM, Colour Classic, InstaTower and QuickSilver.
Please don't tell me that's a 20" screen. Grrrrr.....
Gorgeous!

Looks like a 15 to me - don't the 17" and 20" models have a widescreen?Please don't tell me that's a 20" screen. Grrrrr.....
Yeah it's the Rev. A 15"
I have to say, that your pictures really show it off. Other shots I have seen of the iMac G4 never did it justice.

Yeah, check out that keyboard tray!
wow very nice find, that is a lucky find if you ask me. i havent heard of anyone finding one in the trash yet (not that there has never been one found in the trash).
wow i wish i could find a Mac in the trash around me (something newer).
the only Macs i have seen around this town is the Mac mini the library uses for something, and back in the day when the schools used Apple/Macs.
i see PCs in the trash like 386 - PII era.
and again very nice find. i can just imagine if it could think what it was thinking when it was put in the trash and when you came and saved it from its fate.

This is insane. Go back to that guy's house and kick his ass.
This is my mom's daily computer. She does everything on it. iMac G4s are still completely useful!!! Who would throw it away!!!

I hope you're joking - I would definitely NOT be violent towards someone who gave me a very nice computer for free!
Maybe the owner needed to do more on their computer than your mom does with her computer.
Of course I'm joking, but if the original poster had not found it, it would have been crushed.I hope you're joking - I would definitely NOT be violent towards someone who gave me a very nice computer for free!
"Gee, this computer from 2003 won't run Leopard and Photoshop v15.5 - let's have it crushed."Maybe the owner needed to do more on their computer than your mom does with her computer.
Unfortunately thats the mentality of a lot of people these days. My Dell Dimension 2350, P4 Northwood/2 Ghz is a fine computer, which does just about everything I ask of it. With the Radeon 7000 PCI i'll be adding on the weekend, it should even run Vista ok-ish. However, I hear quite frequently about machines of this vintage being scrapped, simply because the owner doesn't believe its worth much.
I've got computers from 2000 that are perfectly capable of running the programs I need, and doing the operations I need, but none of them (or even the fastest G4s from 2003) are capable of doing those things as fast as I need, and/or would like them to be.
The computer may not be worthless, but anything more than a few years old is at the end of its life for people who use their computers professionally, or for any kind of digital media, definitely appreciate the speed of any newer computer.

Of course they appreciate the speed of a newer computer. Its like buying a new car to replace your old one, the old one still runs fine and someone else could find a good use for it, but it still could end up in a junkyard. A lot of people don't realize the value of their old items, i mean they could have got hundereds for that iMac on ebay, or even locally. I don't understand why they wouldn't want it as even a kitchen computer or something. I can see getting rid of a G3 or something like that but the G4 is still a fast computer that has a contemporary look and doesn't look like an "old" computer.
Kitchen computers are always nice, but many people don't see the need to have more than one computer. You won't see me throwing out an old computer, but I'm also not doing my photo work on ye olde G4 (or even P4.)
