Of course, I'd still be reading all my Mac conversations on comp.sys.mac.xxxx if that's where the conversations still were. I still don't understand the need for web based fora when there's a nice universal, easy to find, hierarchically arranged-by-topic set of discussion groups that cover every topic under the sun--and quite a few out of the sun too.
Unfortunately, USENET seems to be primarily used for file trading and spam now.

I suspect that it would probably be possible to create a theme for the forum using basic tables, html, a more contrasty set of colors, etc, although the question is who will put in the time to create the theme and make sure it does everything we want the forum to do.
I think the best solution would be what I proposed earlier in this thread or the bug thread (I forget which). A universal phpBB forum reader that runs on 68K Macs. REALbasic v1 or v2 would be the easiest way to code this, and the program could run as far back as System 7.5 with Open Transport on at least a 68030. Plus, the program would support any phpBB forum, giving it great utility, and you could compile it for OS X using a newer version of REALbasic. I have the skills but currently not the time to write something like this up.

Not having the page numbers by the words of the thread on the forums is messing me up. I keep thinking the threads are only one page.

:D Much better! :D :D :D :D

Though with the extended sig space that is big even for a small sig I might as well expand. ;)

For those complaining about not being able to use the forum with a 68K Mac... did anyone actually try? I just logged on with iCab 2.99 on my LC 475 (with CSS disabled) and it's perfectly useable. It's not pretty, mind you and if you enable CSS it goes batshit., but it certainly works.

And it has a very System 7 theme ;-)

Edit: actually the only thing that doesn't translate nicely is the new logo (sorry, Tom!)

Yeah, this really will take some getting used to. I guess I am glad that we finally made the upgrade. It'll be interesting.

Changing to Subsilver2 fixed it for me.

I think the Prosilver designers tried to make a pretty theme without thinking about the usability.

i was about to say, i havent been gone this long! :p looks good tom! great job! can u put the quick reply back tho?

I agree with the earlier poster who stated that the work of the changeover was carried off near miraculously--so seemless and without down time.

One thing that still bothers me, even using the SubSilver theme is the "offline" and "On-line" box in the lefthand sidebar. It's larger than the name of the author and very distracting. Is there any way of going back to a little green dot or something similarly unobtrusive? Surely whether that user is on or off line is much less important than his/her identity.

How's that – I've moved it down to where the Profile/PM/etc buttons are. It should be a bit less obtrusive down there.

Truly gorgeous. Now, please-please-please mayhaf the reply button next to the quote button in Subsilver2? And the quick reply box back? And a free beer button?

.......since the Great Crash a couple of years ago.............
hahaha the "Great Crash" LOL!

I'll have to admit I prefer the old one better than the new one too, but such is life ;-)

btw, just wanted to give a heads up, but I am posting this under OS 9 with I.Explorer 5. works great! better than my forum renders!

I forgot how usables sites under IExplorer 5 were on the web. I might have to browse around a bit more :p

I did try the other day and although it did load, things on the pages were in quite a different place than they were on my G4. The last forum appeared roughly the same on 68K browsers and modern browsers, and the one before that was virtually identicle on both.

The new layout is actually growing on me a bit now and I especially like the fact that you can turn of signatures. That makes threads much more readable and makes it easier to concentrate on the topic being discussed.

I tried the forum using iCab 2.9.9 on an LC 575.

Prosilver, CSS Enabled: Complete disaster. Slow and unusable.

Prosilver, CSS Disabled: Ugly, kind of jumbled up, but usable.

Subsilver2, CSS Enabled: Actually renders quite well but very slowly.

Subsilver2, CSS Disabled: Not as ugly as Prosilver. Usable.

Looks very nice. It hurts my eyes for some reason though.

I for one like the new theme. It is unfortunate that it does not work with any web browser under os9 or older without playing around but that is better than it not working at all.

Updates are always good (except when it comes to iTunes).

;D And sometimes Windows. ;D

RE: New theme.

Do Not Like.

At All.

The site looks far less retro now and to be honest reeks of amateurism in it's design style. I greatly dislike the avatars and usernames being on the right. Secondly, the blue is quite distracting.

I sincerely hope this changes, and soon. Otherwise I might have to reduce my visits. Now because of the users or content mind you, but because it really, really, really, really, really hurts my eyes. I took the time to type out each 'really' because I actually feel that way. Sorry, but that is how it is.

I might add that the tiny page numbers are messing me up badly. I kept seeing the new posts colored icon but i click on the thread and theres no new posts. Then I noticed the tiny little page numbers.

Change to the Subsilver2 theme, it's not that hard. It's usable with Subsilver2.

Thanks Mike.

It's so much better now.

In case you haven't noticed, we've upgraded the forums to phpBB3. Quite a lot has changed, so feel free to have a look around and see what's new. There could well be bugs cropping up with the new system, so please report them in the Bug Tracker:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=24

The old forum archive is offline for the moment (I needed the disk space for the upgrade), but I'll try and get it back online soon.

Cheers all,

~T
The upgrades look very nice. Thanks for all of your hard work, I really appreciate it.

Tom et al,

I gather that the theme itself isn't portable, but if you need Platinum graphics for any theme work you are doing, you are welcome to steal some from the PPCMLA. I have no experience with phpBB3, so I don't know if they will work out of the box, but I am nevertheless happy to make the donation (especially since they are © Apple, most likely). ;-)

Peace,

Drew

That would be great to have a platinum theme! Also a System 7 theme would be quite nice. I think that would make the place seem a lot more Mac-like.
