Wha?! Max size of signiture 255 characters! Troubleshooting 59 posts Dec 8, 2009 — Dec 10, 2009
what happens when I want to add a machine to the list? :disapprove:
Make a wiki page and link to that.
I might just do that, but I think a new wiki account, new page, text of that page, and a link to the page would take up more database space than an extra few characters in my signature.

How does this help?

Code:
(\_/)
(O.o)
(> <) This is Bunny. Copy Bunny into your signature to help him on his way to world domination.
Having a virus in your signature and then claiming there isn't enough room.....

True. But I have 500kilobits up
Oh? I can beat that. I have 128kbits up!

:(

Ha.

What everyone else said. Your sig is irritatingly ginormous, macgeek417, and I've been pondering pointing it out to you for a while. Please trim it.
Maybe I would, but 255chars is a bit small, even if I trimmed it.

If it was back at 500chars, I might trim a line or two off...

(hint, hint)

:p

:)

Oh and out of curiosity i just tried trimming a few lines from my sig but its still around 400-450chars.

It's not database space that's the problem - it's screen space. Your 300 lines of BS is just rude.

Fireball: iMac Summer 2000 - Unstable: eMac 800 - Crappaq: Compaq Presario C500, Vista Basic - Space Heater: Compaq Presario SR1110NX, MicroXP/Xubuntu 9.10 Dual-Boot - Treebark: Macintosh LCIII - 68k Macs Liberated: 1I have seen the evils in procrastination, and I vow to change my ways tomorrow.
Slightly fixed?

I'll just leave it as it is.

I hadn't noticed it before until ~tl pointed it out; but your signature is technically in violation of the Forum Rules.

I'll just leave it as it is.
By the way, this is what your post looks like on my netbook:

(Click for full size)

Your one-line post completely fills my browser window.

Oh, yeah? I'm posting this from a DS screen whch is what, 320x240?

Why are you using Internet Exploder? you should use Chrome, Safari, or Firefox.

Edit: Got on a REAL computer and edited the typos/grammer errors!

:-p

Most of the time, I run Google Chrome on the netbook; without Flash installed. And now that the Norton trial has expired, I'm going to tempt the beast and go AV-free.

Yes, the only reason I used IE (pronounced "aaiiieeeeeee!!!", of course,) was to demonstrate the problem. Yes, I then turned on all the various bars that I normally would have off, even when I have to use IE.

I think the slightly edited version someone posted is a great idea. and get rid of the Bunny stuff.

My signature used to be like 10 lines long with EXACT info on each of my macs. it was maddening.

So do I. But, it's still over the 255 char limit... however, the one I've just imposed (as possibly one of my last gestures as an admin here) isn't [:o)] ]'>

OWNED!

(No offense to MacGeek.)

Let's just disable signatures. They've been more or less whittled down to nothing (we've gone from 500 characters, smileys, and links, to 255 characters, no smileys, no links), and we're all being told to use the Wiki anyway, right? How much more are signatures going to be trimmed back? Hey, let's go to 200 characters. That seems reasonable. Or 150, that looks fine. Let's ban BBCode because it's a Wednesday and I have a hangnail!

Maybe someone can make some kind of browser add-on that automatically pastes in a fake signature at the end of every post.

Or we could all get together to whine about the terms of the free service we're using

I'm sure i'm not the only one to remember back when this place had an army motif... people actually had some clever uses for their signatures back then. Lets see more of that... while we're at it, how about the army motif back as well...

...never gonna happen. Oh well.

Or we could all get together to whine about the terms of the free service we're using
I thought that's pretty much what the entire forum was reduced to these days... or so i've been told...

Yeah. Ridiculous.

Noone complained about my sig OR avatar until just the other day.

I have a better idea: Let's make it so emoticons are auto-translated and anyone who uses one gets banned!

EDIT: ooh, ooh, ooh! How about we make the max text size of a sig: be this big!

Of course, everyone can easily read that! Seems resonable enough!!!

So do I. But, it's still over the 255 char limit... however, the one I've just imposed (as possibly one of my last gestures as an admin here) isn't [:o)] ]'>
I thought you were "not an admin anymore" and "retired"

Really, how big does your signature need to be? What do you want to put in it that could be of use that is over 255 characters? I mean, really.

Or, How about you do signitures like they do at GBAtemp.net - Make each one be a max of foo x bar pixels. If it's over that it has a scrollbar added.

Signatures are just replicated noise, they don't add anything. I suggest that 255 is too many.

Well by that deffinition we should just ban use of spaces because they're just repettive noise. We should also ban use of punctuation and any characters besides A-Z and 0-9. While were at it why not just ban use of the words and, the, I, me, and or, as they're just repettive noise.

See how much space that saves? People with netbooks should just *love* that!

Don't be silly. Punctuation is a vital part of ensuring the legibility of text.

It's more about the post/not-post ratio than anything else. If you have a line or two of post and 11 lines of signature (which doesn't add anything to the discussion topic) then the signal to noise ratio is pretty low.

I thought you were "not an admin anymore" and "retired"> :(
Still not quite retired yet. Still a few things to sort out. However, you'll be rid of me soon, don't worry [:o)] ]'>

How rude!

anyway, yes looking back 99% of your post's are barley a full sentence and a eighth page of signature, its silly, and as already stated (and should have been the end of it) use the wiki, there you can document all your stuff to your heats content, which in the end would provide more usable info to the community.

No one's mentioned that you can actually turn of signatures (along with images, flash, smilies and avatars) in the User Control Panel (Board preferences --> Edit display options). I realize it wouldn't be necessary if everyone were polite and considerate etc, but reality is often otherwise... :(

And the quoted/original ratio is also a common indicator of readability and politeness.

;)

*rabble rabble rabble* :disapprove: Let's just lock this topic and call it a day.

Yeah, It's not like the Mods will change anything unless they want to. They don't have to change anything unless they want to, therefore they won't.

Personally, I think the rules should be like a democracy, but the Mods wouldn't like that because they wouldn't be able to use their power of their dictatorship.
