Rescued a 512k today. WTB a pristine system disk?
Brought it home, and it wouldn't start up.
Cracked the case, and reseated connectors and did some general cleaning.
Not I've got the familiar "Where is my System Disk?" icon.
Now I need a good source to get some system disks. None of my machines here in the house have a 3.5" drive anymore, much less the ability to format the old mac floppies. :b&w:

Tom Lee, you are a MacSaint. We should all be so generous. Truth is, unless everything is set up and running, it's a pain in the ass to make and test 400K MFS disks, and just one more thing to do during the day to package them properly and put them in the mail. But now that I know you are not too far from LA, I may just have to drive up there an hug you! :beige:
This may raise the collective community ire, but I think the http://www.macbootdisk.com "Rescue My Classic Mac" service offered by Kevin Rye is perfectly acceptable. He offers a practical service for a reasonable, though not cheap, price. Essentially he mass produced a bunch of disks at once and now has them on-hand, ready to ship out. Whatever one may think of it, or the prices he charges, it's a handy service when one is in desperate need of a 400K MFS boot disk and Tom, or another one of us are unavailable to, or not feeling especially generous at that moment – particularly for those who have not yet stumbled across our little oasis here on the internet.

As for rescuing, I've been in the habit of rescuing hardware (much to the chagrin of my wife) for quite awhile. Unfortunately, a while back we had to move to a smaller place and I was forced to sell my collection.
This is my first foray into rescuing classic macs, in the past I mainly rescued vintage UNIX capable hardware. So I'm into all new territory.

No misunderstanding with me. However some people bristle at the idea of paying for these things when most of us are willing to donate what is essentially a very inexpensive item for the good of the Mac community. But, it has been my experience more often than not that the good smaritans are not always available on our schedules. In fact I got reemed--out over at LEM forums for posting this exact same link to a pay service. Then a few months later I recommended they guy who had originally offered to make free disks and surprise surprise, he asked not to be since several months out of the year he could not make disks. That's why you can't fault the guy for providing a stable service. It ain't a perfect world. And he will only offer his pay service as long as his original supply holds out.
