AUS - Who wants some booty? You've gotta work for it though PowerPC 37 posts Mar 22, 2011 — Apr 27, 2011
Alright, so here's the deal.

I bid on an auction on eBay, and the seller says he has a 40 foot container full of every type of Mac imaginable. The only caveat is that you had to pack it all up, and take everything, no picking through it and leaving the crap behind.

I was fully prepared to go get it all and divvy up all the booty (as there is more than any sane person could ever want). I am talking THE BIGGEST CONQUEST most of you would have seen, especially in Australia. Here's where the problem starts...

I lost my job after I got back from a holiday, about two weeks before I was due to fly down and pack everything up. I'm on the Gold Coast, and the stuff is in Wagga Wagga. I have only just found a job after 2 months, so money isn't exactly abundant right now. I feel bad leaving the guy in the lurch, and I hate missing out on all the great items that would be in there. His website said something about 40 Mac Pluses, 10 of this, 12 of that, so this is massive.

What I want to know is, are there any of you out there willing to pack it all up, take what you want, and put aside a small amount for myself? Enough that I could fill a Ford Territory up and come and get it? I guess this is a show of hands, for those who are absolutely 100% keen. Any takers?

Imagine turning on those 40 Pluses simultaneously. That would be awesome. 8-)

Hey js,

I have to say, for a few minutes I was thinking of how I'd get to Wagga, and bring items back in a Honda Civic :) But it sounds just too immense, and far away - and the thought of having 40 Mac Pluses to essentially dispose of, in a town I don't know, well, computer/wife says no :D

Could you PM me the website?

Thanks

JB

What a shame....if it wasn't for the fact that I'm all the way out here in Longreach, I'd be having thoughts about how many Pluses I can fit into the back of an Astra... :)

Oh and js, sorry to hear about your loss of employment.

I can see the headlines now "Wagga Wagga inundated with mysterious vintage Macs dumped in secluded streets" :)

But seriously, you'd have to chuck some of it, so as enticing as it sounds, I think the owner of the crate should offer some leeway - some gone is better than none at all.

JB

When do you need the faithful to assemble?

I remember that auction on ebay.

It was listed under apple keyboards :?:

I drooled over it while it was running, would like to help, but I don't drive and where would I put a 40ft container!? 8-o

If the container (or its contents) does pass through Sydney please do PM me and I will gladly help lighten the load! :D

Alright, I have emailed the seller and asked if the following is possible:

1 Go down at Easter and pack as much as I can in the car and trailer (a couple of items would be shotgunned by myself, such as a Mac Portable)

2 You all do the same

3 Whatever is left, needs to be taken care of. If this means disposal, we all have to help out

4 PARTAY!

I think this is a fair way to go about it. There is a wide variety of 80s Macs onwards, so plenty of Pluses, SEs, some Classics, stacks of LCs, so much that an equal share would be easy. There are monitors, software, heaps of goodies.

What do you say?

PS - Website no longer exists, sorry!

PPS - I am just relying on his estimate of a 40 foot container, could be less for all I know. The website made it sound like there was less than that, like 3 of this, 5 of that (IIfx), etc.

I'm all in favour of a Sydney contingent of those with flatbeds or utes driving up and picking up things, hell I'd pay someone petrol munniez to bring me back a 9600 :p

(Out of interest, how much is a share of petrol munniez to Wagga Wagga? Last time I went up there by car petrol was considerably cheaper, around 70c/L... /oldfart)

Is this the point where I mention that I own a two tonne furniture truck?*

*Currently unregistered.

Now, remember, you have to help take it all, not just the good stuff. He wants it all gone, not for us to pick through and take the good items.

So, he came back and said he would be happy for a contingent to turn up and take it all away. How often has a massive conquest like this come up, and how often do we all get to share the spoils?

So, here's what I'm thinking. We turn up on Easter Saturday, pack as much in as we can, and help dispose of anything that is unwanted. He will be keeping a handful of items for himself, but the rest I

Is up for grabs.

I'll post a list of items tonight that were on his website. All I need now are some firm commitments from you guys. I know, we'll call ourselves 'The Firm Commitments'.

1. Jason (me)

2.

Jason, add me as your number 2 of the committed. SWMBO has given me a leave pass ;)

Michael

Sadly not I - just that bit far, unreliable car, wife pregnant would hazard her health with more Macs in the house! Good luck with your haul.

JB

Byrd, methinks that the extra Macs would more likely be a hazard to your health, not your wife's. ;)

I'd be in, but i'm in South Australia. I'll be watching this thread with great interest as I may be in for a few machines. I have some in mind (a Mac 128k to a Plus sounds enticing, Colour Classic if there's multiples, and although it's a long shot i'd do scary things for a Power Macintosh G5- he did say "every type of Mac imaginable") and I could probably throw some cash your way to make it happen depending on when you're planning to do this.

Oh Easter... well that counts me out unless I can persuade SWMBO to take our kids out west for holidays.

Best of luck with the spoils of Wagga Wagga comrades!

Looking forward to seeing some amazing posts in conquests!

Come on guys, who is in?

We are talking FREE old school mac stuff, quite a few Pluses, and bits and pieces of everything since. There are a shedload of Power Macs (12 of this, 8 of that, etc), heaps of printers, monitors, everything.

I just need some people to come down (or up), load up a car and take as much as possible. The more of us there are, the less that will become landfill. We will have to dispose of stuff otherwise, and I want to save as much as possible.

Like I said, he tells me there is enough to fill a 40 foot container. Step on up!

If you find a Director's Edition PowerMac in that massive lot, let me know JS (and yes, I am aware of shipping costs to Canada). :beige:

I really wish I could help, but I don't plan on traveling down under anytime soon (unfortunately).

Any progress made on this excursion?

I'm now a little bit iffy as to what is down there. I plan on making a trip down to see what he has, and if I can convince him to part with some of the collection to others on here that may want to visit, but at a later stage that is more suitable to them. I'll also have a better idea of what is there, and can let you know so you can decide whether it is worthwhile to any of you or not.

He seems reluctant to let his collection go, which I understand perfectly, so I want to be as sensitive as I can about the whole thing. Will let you know how it goes, but at the moment, I'm treating it as a road trip with a possible happy ending, but I'm not holding my breath.

Does it have to be Easter? I'd be up for a road trip in a few weeks, but the truck needs some work first. Also, I would definitely not be able to supply any storage space.

I'll document what is there, and try to convince him to let you guys go down at a more suitable time. At least that way, you'll know if it is worthwhile or not.

Show of hands for those that would go in the next few months on their own, just so I can tell him?

Hi, my hand is raised.

Raised, provisionally. Like I said I have zero storage. If anyone else in Melbourne, Sydney or parts nearby has some storage I might be able to do a load.

Is the stuff currently in a container?

If yes, why not just hire a truck to take it?

If no, why not buy a container (they're actually fairly cheap to buy used here in the US) and take it to them, and then fill it, and take it, and just put it at a MLAer's house? The biggest issue is the man-power that would be needed to move a 40-foot container's worth of stuff from one container to the next in a single day. That might be something you'd ask Byrd to help out with even if he can't actually take any of the Macs at the moment. (Although I would totally understand not wanting to leave town on any big adventures with the wife pregnant.)

Just as a thought re potential logistics options.

20 foot containers start at about $1600; 40 footers at about $2200. They're not that cheap.

Exactly. So it's a come on down and load your car/truck/wagon up and take as much as you can.

It's already costing me a fortune to go down there, so this is the only avenue I'm considering.

Cory5412: by all means if I was nearer, I'd be all over this - the thought of seeing dozens/hundreds/bazillions of Macs piled up is pants-wettingly pleasurable. But it's just too far for me, as exciting as it sounds. I'd do anything to help if closer. And besides, you can only do so much with 40 Mac Pluses :)

So js I'd just be a bit wary myself that you still don't know exactly what will be available when you rock up - you really don't want to be given access to only 40 Mac Pluses! :D I've met similar people in the past and when it comes down to the crunch ...

But I wish you best of luck and please photograph the haul for prosperity's sake, Indiana Jones style! Incidentally, have any of you watched Storage Wars, a reality TV show?

JB

I would actually really love to head down there and grab a carload of stuff myself...unfortunately though Wagga Wagga is about an 18 hour drive from Longreach. :(

I'm driving 16 hours. What are ya, a man or a mouse? :p
