IIfx ROM SIMM in a IIsi . . .

My research aim is to discover whether the OO Pseudo Slot Macintosh Video Address, which is unimplemented in the IIfx, will disable the Vampire Video Sub-System in the IIsi.

Well, I finally decided to try my IIfx ROM SIMM in the IIsi despite the lack of confirmationthat it has been done successfully or unsuccessfully already, without damage to the IIfx ROM SIMM or the IIsi.
I got no boot chimes from the IIsi, but the IIfx booted just fine after that little experiment!

Odd, the IIfx and IIsi ROM SIMMs work in an SE/30, so you would think a IIfx ROM would work in a IIsi.
Backward compatibility for ROM cleanliness on the SE/30 is one thing.
However, forward compatibility for increased utility of the IIsi is an entirely different animal!

I'm betting that Apple didn't want either the IIfx or the IIci ROM SIMMs to be compatible with the IIsi!
IMHO, the IIsi was intentionally hobbled as a Low End or, at best, a Mid Market Mac:
__Its RAM config was limited to an odd number by soldering 1MB as Bank A directly onto the Mobo.
____The 4 SIMM Slots available for Bank A on the High End Macs IIci and IIfx being excised from the IIsi to "protect" High End $ale$$$$$$!
__Its expansion was limited to an either/or PDS/NuBus choice physically and probably electronically by, ever so slight, changes to the SE/30's PDS.
____This was probably aided by barring implementation of the NuBus signal on PDS Cards for the IIsi, that pin's signal being different on the SE/30.
__Its ROM/Memory Mapping was limited to only FOUR NuBus Slot/Pseudo Slot Addresses. :disapprove:

I'll go ahead and reply in here. The difference I noticed was on the SIMM pin 46 (left to right, with the notch side on the left). GttMFH2E says it is +5 volts, but the IIsi's dev note says it is A23 (GttMFH2E only goes up to A22, which is on pin 45). I really don't know if Apple actually connected that pin on the IIfx SIMM -- you'll have to check it. I'm assuming that hooking A23 to VCC would be a bad thing. The simple solution to make my new custom SIMMs compatible with both is to leave pin 46 not connected to anything. On my SIMM design, I had it connected to all the other +5V pins on the SIMM. I should have probably just left it unconnected. So if Apple connected that pin to anything on the IIfx SIMM, that could be causing your problem.
More likely though is that the IIsi's just too new for the IIfx's ROM code

Interesting...I'm kind of curious now to try IIfx and IIsi ROMs in my IIci after you mentioned that. I have the hardware necessary to try it now!

Naturally after asking that question, I tried to boot my IIci with a IIfx ROM and a IIsi ROM using my programmable ROM SIMM.
It worked fine both times! Not sure if it really has any benefit, but it does work. In both cases, About this Macintosh in System 7.0.1 still identifies the computer as a Macintosh IIci.

Did you have a NuBus video card installed? If so, Trash80 was curious as this might disable the onboard video that noms system RAM.

I'd like to use the DuoDock's Gemini Card to get a second (7 inch) NuBus Card into the Box underneath the Full Length Rocket 33 . . .
. . . as well as the Radius Color Pivot II PDS Card and PDS NIC going underneath the MoBo at the same time! }
I don't think disabling the MoBo's Vampire Video poses any problem at all, the System Polls the Video sense lines for PixelCount & Color Depth on startup and doesn't seem to buffer any of Bank A's Memory if no monitor is hooked up to the port (or set up in the PRAM?) so hacking a FULL Bank A shouldn't be problematic.

The only thing that kind of troubles me is that the only successful combinations I've seen so far are newer ROMs running on older hardware, but the IIsi is newer than the IIfx. I sure hope the IIfx ROM in IIsi idea works though!
If the IIfx ROM doesn't work, maybe the IIci ROM will, dunno.

I'm pretty sure the IIsi was the first in the II series to have built-in audio input. (Maybe the first Mac ever to have it?) The IIfx doesn't have an audio in port...

One of our intrepid ROM Hackers PM'd me about the possibility of a jumper on the motherboard that might be necessary to reset to toggle MoBo ROM & SIMM ROM, so I checked it out and found one to try! I stuck a header pin jumper on it and it disabled the MoBo ROMs all right! [

. . . tried the stock IIfx ROM SIMM and I got boot chimes! :
The Radius Color Pivot II PDS Card's Pre-boot splash screen followed up a four chime (?) memory error message, (?) which didn't really surprise me a bit.
Wolfed down some lunch and went back to work with GttMFH2E in hand and did a bit of copying and research. The error message probably results from the 1MB soldered to the IIsi MoBo as a funky Vampire Video RAM Buffer. It appears that the IIfx can't use SIMMs smaller than 1MB, so the IIsi's measly equivalent of four 256k SIMMs in Bank A made the IIfx ROM SIMM equipped IIsi barf!
Got home after work just now, pulled all the RAM out of Bank A of the IIfx and it booted up just fine! :approve:
Next step: desolder all the VCC connections to that measley 1MB of soldered DRAM on the IIsi's MoBo and see what transpires! }

Ooh, excellent update! I'm glad you found the jumper! So that was the problem as far as that goes. I was a little worried because I wasn't sure if the IIsi even had a ROM select jumper (I figured that maybe if there's ROM soldered, there's no way to use the SIMM.) Glad I was wrong, and that's awesome that you actually got it to chime!
It will be interesting to see what happens once you disconnect the motherboard RAM! Is removing VCC enough? Sometimes chips can still get phantom power over the other wires -- I've seen it on smaller chips, no idea about how RAM chips behave in that case. Maybe you could disconnect the output enable lines and/or chip select lines instead? Just a thought.

Dunno, all my resting has been very hurried during lunches or tonight, in between work and running over to the grlf's place. Maybe I'll get a chance to play with the MoBo during the next few days. Yep, it has a standard IIfx ROM Dump burn and boots the IIfx nicely, as does the standard IIfx ROM SIMM, of course. It's strange that the Unmodified IIfx ROM SIMM is working in the IIsi whereas the modified IIci ROM SIMM with the IIfx ROM Image burn doesn't . . .Why did the stock IIfx ROM work when the modified one didn't? What's important is to get the IIsi RAM config to look similar enough to a kosher IIfx RAM config to get the IIsi to pass the bootup routines on the IIfx ROM, if the IIsi boots successfully with the IIci ROM Image burn, or the IIfx ROM image burn, I expect to lose the Microphone input support until a ROM tweak becomes available, but that's no biggie!
That's why I tested the IIfx with RAM installed in only Bank B! :approve:
Back to hackin' hardware! Installing an overfull Bank A (and Bank B for that matter) on the SuperIIsi™ is one of the major thrusts of this hack's aims. So long as no Monitor sense lines (?) are detected or color depth info is present in the PRAM, the buffering of the first MB of Bank A appears to be a non-issue!
RAM it to the MAX!!!! :lol:
p.s. thanks for the "MoBo ROM/ROM SIMM jumper tip-off!" ISTR reading about such things, but the only Mac I've ever had around to play ROM SIMM ganes with was my pet IIfx. The IIsi project is very recent, it's code name is "Thumper" . . .

I yanked five of the six NuBus Cards out of the IIfx, unhooked the drives, removed the Drive Tray and then reseated all the RAM SIMMS & the Original ROM SIMM and got boot chimes on the first try! Your SIMM didn't kill the IIfx . . .
. . . maybe it really did just need a nap!
More likely I unseated something or other . . . :
I reinstalled/reconnected the drives/tray and booted just fine. :approve:
So, I promptly depopulated Bank A once again, and she booted up JUST FINE with only 32MB in Bank B!
Maybe I'll take a peek at the IIsi MoBo's Bank A, which is hidden under the Borked PSU's Box. Right now that box is missing its top and is supporting a Quadra 700's PSU at a jaunty angle while it holds the freed up Power Cable down to the MoBo connector . . .
. . . makes for an interesting looking conglomeration!

What I mean is, even if the soldered RAM is not responding, will the IIsi try to assume it's still there? Like for instance are the SIMM sockets hardwired to only map from addresses 1 MB and higher? Or does the MMU transparently handle all of that? (I honestly don't know anything about how the RAM works in these computers...this question is mainly for my curiosity)
What I mean is, even if the soldered RAM is not responding, will the IIsi try to assume it's still there? Like for instance are the SIMM sockets hardwired to only map from addresses 1 MB and higher? Or does the MMU transparently handle all of that? (I honestly don't know anything about how the RAM works in these computers...this question is mainly for my curiosity)
From the DevNote, it sounds as if the IIsi polls the sense lines for monitor type, and likely the PRAM for B/W or grayscale/color bit depth, in determining how much of Bank A needs to be buffered for Video Memory.
Assumptions/Ramifications
If - Apple went to the trouble of tweaking the IIci ROM to limit Bank A to 1MB in the IIsi's Memory Mapping
Then - that limitation should disappear upon substitution of a ROM with a less limited memory mapping scheme.
If - hacking the IIsi's soldered in memory allotment in Bank A entails giving up the use of the Mobo's Vampire Video
Given - the IIsi's I/O expansion limitations imposed by the single PDS slot/PDS Adapter Or single slot NuBus Adapter
Then - Apple likely assumed that no IIsi user would bother to hack the IIsi's soldered in memory allotment Bank A
If - hacking the IIsi's soldered in memory allotment in Bank A does not affect the buffering of the first MB of a hacked Bank A
Given - the IIsi's Memory Map Limitation of 1MB for for Bank A
Then- that limitation should disappear upon substitution of a ROM with a less limited memory mapping scheme.
Assuming - a Hackintosh was a practical option at that point, the IIsi would be immediately dismissed as a viable candidate

I just burned a Quadra 650 ROM dump onto my SIMM for fun. It boots the IIci! WITH the IIci's startup chime!
About this Macintosh still identifies it as a IIci. The only thing that's weird is I think it resets the SCSI bus or something, because my hard drive makes its initialization ticks twice (normally it does a few ticks while it's warming up). The blinking question mark comes up before the ticking is finished, but then a couple seconds later the hard drive finishes initializing, the happy mac appears, and the IIci boots right up.
Amazing, isn't it? I mean, the Quadra is a 68040 Mac. I assumed they would have just thrown out all the old Mac startup stuff, but it still works with the IIci. Does anyone else smell the need for us to create a Macintosh ROM compatibility matrix project? ;-)
