Two Powermacs. But should I keep?

Two Powermacs. But should I keep? Troubleshooting 21 posts Sep 17, 2012 — Oct 22, 2012
So I kinda want a stand alone Powermac to serve delicious oldskool apps to my 7100 when it's all said and done.

I found these guys at a hacker studio I frequent, and they look cool, but there is some problems. They both have composite/coaxial and svideo capture cards!

First up is Earshot, as she's called.

Then there is a second one, that has this interesting rig. Looks like she was rack or cart mounted. She boots!

So I can have either, they are free for the taking (there's also an iMac that I will get some pics of). But when I boot the second one there is WEIRD graphical glitches usually when re-waking from sleep. I'm wondering if this is because of the video capture cards? If the graphics card is toast what kind of behaviour would you expect.

Would there be any value in swapping components to make one that works without error?

In short, yes. And if you manage to get the dual 800 working, it will happily thrash the single 933 in OS X or PPC Linux - especially if it's the version with 2MB of L3 cache per CPU.

Combine'em. My G4 digital audio serves as an FTP server for my IIci via Fetch 3.0.3 (and SE/30 once it returns from being recapped). I also use it as my main computer, so it serves dual purposes.

Also, find a Griffin iMate, so you can use an ADB keyboard with whichever G4 winds up being the survivor.

Thanks! I did indeed do just that.

I kept the dual-y 800 with the 1.6 gigs of ram. Its pretty damn zippy. Did a clean install of 10.4 and kept all the drives. All I really did to remedy the video problem was swap the cards, but on booting into 9.2 it does weird lines across the screen (like a C64 loading a program, almost) just before the happy mac. Weird. It has dual composite/s-video inputs I might use it to record some video games... maybe... I dunno. Maybe I'll use it to test my raspberry pies composite output. :D

I might just pass it on to someone who needs it, if anyone in Toronto is reading this gimme a shout.

Which video card is installed in the AGP slot? Wonder if it's a driver issue in 9... In any case, if you do need a new video card, the Radeon 9700 (reflashed to Mac ROMs) works quite well. Got one in my digital audio.

If the hammerfall dsp card is still in the other one, I'll take that. Does it have the breakout cables?

Hey fairchild, you're welcome to take a look.

Its sitting in that hacker-space interaccess I told you about. Its in their "free-for-all" junk pile so its yours for the taking if you want it.

Cool, I think I'll be able to make it tomorrow!

Cool man, I'll be there. :approve:

Have they got a DA PSU available? :?:

My beloved DA be DOA. If they have a dead PSU, I'd love to get the cables for an ATX attempt. I'd like to leave mine alone for now, maybe I'll have a chance to fix it.

I can certainly grab the PSU out of it and send it to you if you'd like. I'll know more tomorrow when I'm down there.

There's also a spotted iMac that won't boot, but there may be some decent bezel if anyone needs any.

That Dalmation iMac is worth a bundle! Grab it! [;)] ]'>

THX, I really want to get the DA up again!

I have no desire, nor the room, to facilitate an iMac. But would be happy to help someone get their hands on it that want it.

They are easily my least favourite Apple design EVAR. :-x

Mine as well . . . for the most part, but the dinero is nice on a repair/flip, go for it!

YOU ARE EVIL.

Alright maybe I will.

i'll take the imac and the hammerfall dsp card, if you could put those aside for me. i can't make it till next wednesday now :( too much mix work to do!

Whoever does Dalmation Rescue owes me the shipping to get that DA PSU to the Bermuda Triangle. }:)

Hey guys, DSP is nowhere to be found, someone may have beaten you to it! PSU Is removed and secured, as well as ram and the (I believe) damaged gpu and composite input card.

The iMac remains untaken! Looks like shipping is still on you trash ;) !

Just for shetz and gigz I decided to get 9.2 and Infini-d running on Mercury (my name for it).

Compared to my 7100/80 this thing shreds through rendering (I should hope so). This image took her 10 minutes, it took over an hour on the 7100 and that was with shadow and reflection quality severely reduced.

She is a formidable workhorse... and I hate to admit it but I am falling in love with her. I wish all PC's had case designs analogous to this one, its really easy to get things in and out.

I have some problems but I will start a new thread about those soon.

Nice pictures!
