Powermac and Performa (6100) (busted in half CPU)
I Had 3 of these, 2 were 66mhz powermac, 1 was 60mhz performa,( with out cpu cache stick )
anyways, i was messing around with the Heatsink on one of the PM, 6100's
i wasent being too rough or anything like that, and i herd a loud * SNAP *
The dam CPU busted in half, like its basically like a square piece of glass.
The the IBM PPC 601 is soldered in, raised above the PCB, no support under the cpu, just an air gap…
So all the pressure from the heatsink is being fully support by the strength of the thin ceramic cpu.
anyways so i ended up throwing the cache stick, harddrive, ram in the performa,
so, when you attach a fan to the heatsink on these 6100's
make sure to be careful.

Yep. I have six or seven 6100 and 7100 boards with that exact problem. They came to me like that. I've played around with soldering in a replacement PPC601, with little success.
A couple of the problems are that I got the replacements from PM7500 cards and there is a dab of hot glue behind the CPU. So even if the pins are desoldered, one must still melt the hot glue, and its hard to clean the hot glue off the back of the chip without bending any pins.
Then, once that is solved, the PPC601/100 which is on the PM7500 CPU card uses 3.3V and the 6100/7100 supplies 5V. This is easy enough to change, because the voltage regulator on the logic board is adjustable, but it's another thing.
Then, of course, there are the 304 tiny tiny pins....

yeah 304 pins does seem like quite a chore!
Its really a shame these Power PC 601 CPU's Break in half.

just leave the broken cpu in there, as long as it doesn't short out and cause a fire

The original CPU has to be working in order for the G3 upgrade card to work. (As it is only enabled via an extension.)
I've got a couple 6100 motherboards maybe an extra PSU laying around. If you're interested I can fire them up and see if they still work.

(The other two I think are dead.)
If you are also interested, I have some RAM, Apple Cache card and L2 cache. I'll boot it up from a hard drive and see how large the RAM is and the L2 cache is. ($5 more for the RAM and cache?)

Is this common with all 601 processors?
Should I be extra careful with my 7100 if I ever do hardwork near the CPU?

i think its the processors that have the thin wafer with the blue transparent plastic over the ceramic substrate. My guess? ive never seen one broke. Those 304 pins are fun. To be quite honest, BGAs are easier to deal with for rework. But with BGAs its a 50/50 shot unless you have an xray machine. lol.
well mine looks soldered to the motherboard just like yours is... it might be the same package, just be careful if you remove/ re attach the heatsink, if you do take a picture of your cpu and post it in this thread, thanks!

its back together, the only issue with it now is , when the mac bong plays it sounds kind of crackly.
i know you suggested replacing the caps, i have to find a good cap source first, i'd like to find one local.
i have other macs that need caps too.
?? i suppose i could swap the caps of the old board? lol or is that too cheap ?? haha
