Macdrone's Latest Troubleshooting 44 posts Mar 10, 2013 — Dec 17, 2013
I guess I should have my own I guess as I get stuff pretty regular and such.

So I offered 20 on ebay for a 512k so it should be here soon. Needs caps for sure and more. But for 20 I hope the bucket will make me happy. Well see if I can fix it up, pretty ugly tho.

Well I best offered a guy for a macintosh portable M5126 and he accepted. It doesn't work of course so I should be able to figure it out and more to come when it gets here.

A Portable for a 512k? You're a nice guy, Jason.

I think he means he got both a Portable and 512k.

Anyways, nice finds! I'm also working on possibly getting a local 512k, so lets see how that goes. :)

In that case, nice work, 'drone! I have no idea why but I really like my Portable. I think it's the crisp screen and the hokiness of such a giant Luggable. I remember buying it with a twin for $20 total from a guy that had a stack of IIgs'es about ten years ago.

Yes I am getting both and some guy is sending me another 5120 portable for shipping. Ill fix it up and sell that one I am thinking.

I'll buy it when you're ready to sell!! I've wanted one for some time now.

could one of you guys hook a multimeter up to your MacPortable and tell me what the exact voltage is of your 6v battery pack?

also when you put your portable back up on the shelf do you pull the battery pack?

The 512k Looks like it has some problems with the analog video circuit...? it looks different than the standard 'jailbar' pattern to me.

Very nice finds Macdrone! Too bad we don't get any affordable (if any at all!) 512k's, 128k's or portables in The Netherlands.

Ike: Yes, I know.

They're somewhat hard to come by over here in the US too, unfortunately (at least since I've gotten into the hobby).

However, they can be found if one is willing to scour around a bit.

Yeah and since i don't really NEED any of those macs, i'm still happy with my fairly standard collection of things :) i enjoy every mac.

We all just have to be patient.

Yeah any 68ks are hard to find, and when you do find they want EXTRAORDINARY prices for them. I found another 512k, with the keyboard, mouse, power cable, and carrying bag, but the lady wants $100!! I can't afford that much for a vintage computer! Plus I have my 512kE (minus the bag), so I have at least 1 compact. I want to expand it, but the current prices are outrageous!

Just keep looking. Be patient. There is a guy close to here that has 2 SE's and a bunch of beige macs for 125. But it's a three hour drive for me. Only thing he has I don't is a 4400.

I guess I'm very very lucky after all to be in the NL!

SE's, Classics, Pluses for €50 or LESS.

(not to mention nobody around here cares for any of the other 68k or PPC stuff, prices as low as free)

Also, since we are a small country, pickup is quite easy and shipping up to 10kg is only €6,75.

I have some duplicate machines that I need to get running ten plan on putting up here if people want them. Having multiple pluses and se's and such now that i have had fun with them Its time to spread it around. Ill still acquire new toys to play with but if they can be enjoyed they should be.

Where?!
I'd be interested!! $100 is a stretch for me as well, but I could probably pull it off!!

Actually, for such a complete set up (minus S/W and boxes), that's a pretty good deal.

I'll have to search around for it!

That and some VERY interesting old Tektronics workstations and a couple of old HPUX boxes. He wants a fair shade better than $125 for that stuff, though.

He said he would give me all the macs for 125

He told me he would sell ONE of the HPs for $150. Several hundred for the Tek workstations. Like you, the only Mac he had that I was slightly interested in was the 4400 and it was missing parts (the top case, for one).

He told me the 4400 was complete , parts were just not in the picture.

Nice. Still not worth the 3.5 hour drive for me 8-)

Hell its way east of portland and 3.5 hours for me. I am pretty sure I am gonna pass myself.

If you pay for the shipping, i have an rather stock condition 4400/200. Aaaww... i know the shipping is expensive even on surface mail :I

Let me know shipping to 97048. Can't hurt to find out, and thank you.

Quick estimate gives me minium of 75 euro (under 15kg).

Ok so the 512K showed up and as promised when turned on no chime or bong. Lines on screen then whines and switches to kinda checkerboard. Brightness knob works, adjusting height and witdh on board works. So does that mean flyback? I assume that from the switching and whining. I havent had many issues with analogs before but this one looks as clean as I have ever seen. No warm spots on the plastic. I moved the power connector on the analog as my plus had an issue with that once , didnt change anything.

512K F&B.jpg

Well I took out a working plus conversin and put in the 512 motherboard and same thing. So I guess its time to change the 3 radials on the motherboard and see if it does what it should. Gonna have to start keeping some of these on hand I guess.

So both my 5126 and my 5120 showed up and in knowing fashion the 5126 booted and the 5120 did not (most likely caps of coarse).

5126.jpg

Now I will probably do some recapping but the 5126 ran but sucked up power fast in comparison. In its defense the ram is a PDS card giving a total of 8 megs. Could be an 8 meg card but it doesnt have anythig that says that. It has 1 line of dead pixels on the right side :(

The 5120 is a little different than my first 5120. It rad 1 meg ram in the ram slot and a PDS card with 2 megs of ram. It looks like the card allows an add on to that and has a jumper on it. So my rebuilt unit has 4 megs of ram now. In the bottom of the case is a signature. Neither of my other 2 have a signature in sharpie , actually its intials and is probably an assembly guy thing but just in case here it is.

5120 signature.jpg

Now the next thing is the new 5120 does not have screw holes in the top screen. Other than that looks pretty normal.

So doesnt look like there is enough access to screen for a single pixel repair like on a gameboy so Ill leave that alone and recap and let someone else have a stab at the 5120. No books or extras with them but they were very cost effective compared to other portables I have seen. Bags had all thier feet so that was nice.

It looks like the 5120 I redo will be missing the 3 little rubber tabs, have 2 megs of ram, and stock 6.0.8 with not much on it. Of course until its recapped I am getting way ahead of myself.

Thank you all.

So I didnt have a regular LC yet or the cool case 605 so I paid shipping for a couple of dead units. They look like hell, yellow, cracking a broken tab, caps leaking all over. I got my work cut out for me. Luckily I have some old small scsi drives as these are all mising the drives and power to them (whick I have somewhere).

LC's605.jpg

but now I am pretty much done with pizza boxes.

So got a duo 230 off craigslist for shipping. That was gonna be it for a while but.... Took my daughter to Sakura con in Seattle so I went to re LC an low and behold they had a duo mini dock, a floppy drive for duo and the scsi connector for it. I also found another 5300 power supply.

Not gonna lie tho I would be pretty stoked if they would give me that Lisa in there.
