PB 190cs CPU swap?

Hi,a ll..

I read somewhere a long time ago, that the 68LC040 sits in a socket on the logic board, and might be possible to swap to a full 68RC040 with fpu and all.

Has anyone tried this, or is that claim just rubbish anyway?'

In the 190 the chip is soldered to the motherboard. No dice on the upgrade.

Another question then, does someone know if the graphichs s out addon card with ethernet (Focus MV16en)

has the standard rj45 out, or some other strange connecttor?

The card itself has a funky connector for the dongle, which has standard RJ-45 and DA-15 Mac Video Connectors. It's be a shame not to have WiFi on the only stock 68k Mac ever built to use it. (Blackbirds don't count, card cage accessory required)

What I'd like to know is if the 190 can drive any of the nicer screens from the 5300 series? LEM says yes, IR as well, but . . . :

LEM also says 7.1.1 or later, but Apple says 7.5.2 is the earliest version of System 7 that will work on a 190.

So far, when in doubt, I have never found the Apple spec pages to be wrong.

System 7.5.2 is required. The legacy recovery CD further reinforces this by including a 7.5.2 install for the 190. Looks like the 190 is unique in being the only 68k machine to require something newer than 7.1.

It is because it shares a production date and case same as the 5300. I am sure there are enough board differences that its a wonder it was a 1XX series at all. Its more like a repeat of the 100, just totally different than the others.

That's what I figured. The reason why I stuck with a Blackbird series Powerbook.

Interesting point about the production dates, that explains a lot in retrospect. It's no wonder Apple never offered an Active Matrix LCD option for the 190, it was the low end offering.

I'm wondering if 7.1.2P is a patched, machine specific, backwards compatible OS like 6.0.8L was for the PB100

Interestingly enough, 7.1.2P appears to work on the Performa 410(?) a 68030 Mac(?) as well according to that OS chart on Wikipedia.

Given support for the Q630 and the P410 it would be interesting to see if 7.1.2P will load on the PB190

As far as I'm aware, there were several versions of System 7 that were Performa specific:

7.0.1P, 7.1P, 7.1P1, 7.1P2, 7.1P3, 7.1P4, 7.1P5, & 7.1P6

As well as apparently, 7.1.2P, not to be confused with 7.1P2

System Software: 7.1.2 // Finder Version: 7.1.4

What's interesting is that it shares the same Finder version as the very first version of 7.5

If anyone could locate a copy of 7.1P6, as well as 7.1.2P and try it on a 190 with the latest version of the enabler, I'd be very interested.

Apparently 7.1.2P was a "Release for Performa/LC/Quadra 630 (1994)"

I really hope someone tries the 7.1P6 and 7.1.2P on a 190. I'd love to be able to run upgrade to a 190 and still run 7.1

I was referring to System 7.1.x in general.

System 7.1.2 was originally released as a quick port to PPC from the 6100/7100/8100 machines. Its likely 7.1.2P was a intern build patched to support IDE in the Q/P630 machines. A Quadra/Performa 630 series with 7.1.2P from the factory is likely very rare as most came with System 7.5, which was released two months after the machine came out. The Performa 630 Series restore CD that I have here is dated 1994 and has 7.5 on it.

The System 7.1P series is just 7.1 with some Performa specific extensions like At Ease and the desktop background control panels and such. Anyone have a complete list? I don't have a Performa 600 restore CD to check and I liked having the option for decent desktop backgrounds in 7.1.

From what I understand, the 190cs board might be able to drive the 5300c active screen in 256 color mode, since its a 640x480. The svga 800x600 5300ce screen needs more vram.

BUT, on second thought, the actice matrix screen inverter board might need a higher current output from the videocard as well..

I was able to dig up an original Perform 630 CD, which has the 7.1.2P software on it. I updated my Powerbook 500 system folder using the installer and it updated correctly. I now have my PB540c running System Z-7.1.1 (They didn't increment the version number, but it shows a copyright date of 1994, rather than the typical copyright date of 1993 for all other known versions of 7.1.1) & Finder 7.1.4. There were also a number of updated Control Panels & Extensions on the Performa 630 CD which work correctly on the Powerbook 500 as well.

Did they increment the version number to 7.1.2 for the PowerPC version of 7.1.2 or did they leave it at 7.1.1?

I know the 5300c screen works on the 190. I did that to my 190 to make it work since its screen was cracked.

My 190cs came with a cracked LCD as well, I'll have to see if I still have enough of it on hand to give that upgrade a shot.

Yep. Remember that one. My friend had a PB150, while I had a Performa 600. We ran the same 7.1 Macos, with exception for different system enablers. PB 150s screen probably earned "worst viewing experience ever created by man", with its 16 greys passive FSTN. Horrible. The missing ADB port adds insult to the injury. The only ccol thing about it was its codename; JEDI.

Youse kids is spoiled! :lol:

My first PB love and first laptop ever had a Passive Matrix of only 640x400 BLACK & WHITE pixels! I guess it's easy enough to forgive the foibles of your first PB when it's by far the sexiest of the 100 series, but I can also forgive the tail end Charlie of the series its shortcomings. It's by far the most expandable with its 40MB of RAM & BIG IDE HDD/Silent boot capability . . .

. . . and the ADB remediation is eminently hackable. }

PCMCIA in a 150 would be da bombe! :approve: I wonder if it'll drive any of Duo displays?

Reporting that my newly aquired OriNOCO Gold Pcmcia wifi card works flawlessly in the PB190cs.

Running 7.5.2 with Open Transport 1.1.2 and the OriNOCO 6.0 drivers. 128-bit wep encryption on the router.

I hear a faint "plug-and-play", echoing back from 1995.. :approve:
