Might as well start one of my own "Latest..." topics.
I received in the mail today:
And just up the road from the post office, we stopped by the relatively new scrap metal place to drop off some junk. I offhandedly said I'm looking out for old Macs, and the guy who runs the place pointed me to a couple he didn't know what to do with. They are:
Anyway, these last two are pretty grungy looking, but I think they're salvageable.
I will post pictures and more detailed specs as I find them out.

- A PowerMac 6100/66 (Specs unknown, except it has no hard drive)
- A Mac IIcx (the floppy drive's bad, the seller told me, and it's missing it's hard drive, but it otherwise looks complete)

- A Classic (the one with the 8 MHz 68000)
- A Performa 575 (missing a tab on the L/B door, a chip out of the front bezel, and some sort of blue stuff on top, but it appears to be otherwise complete)
- The remnants of some sort of other Mac, perhaps some sort of full size desktop style Quadra, Performa or Power Mac?
Anyway, these last two are pretty grungy looking, but I think they're salvageable.
I will post pictures and more detailed specs as I find them out.

i got one in mine and its awesome. Mac os 8.1/8.6/7.5.5 /7.6 on mine- buy a hd from me for this too
heck you could do 6.0.8/7.0./7.1/7.5.5 /w OT1.3 all on their own partitions

OK, so I've gotten it cleaned up and somewhat deyellowed*.
I plugged it in, and at first, it didn't work right (my Classic II did the same thing, but it was worse), but it came to life after a few tries and booted to System 6.0.7. The display is rather distorted and the brightness is poor, so I think the analog board needs repairs. It has the RAM expansion board, so I can max it out to 4 MB (it has 2 MB currently). It has the stock 40 MB hard drive, which appears to be working okay.
Software includes Microsoft Works 3.0 and HyperCard 2.0.
It apparently had served a rather menial task in it's past life at a car dealership over in Citrus Heights (a suburb of Sacramento, CA), which is probably the only thing unique about this machine.
I'll get a few pictures of it up in awhile.

).Not all of the PM6100s will OC to 90 MHz. At least that was the summary of the reports from back in the day. There were newer adn older revisions of the PPC601 chip and that plays a part in how much OC the machine will tolerate.
However, I also suspect that the voltage regulator may play a part. Apple used an adjustable LT1086 and the voltage level is set by the relationship of two resistors. Resistors have tolerances.
I suspect that if you get a PM6100 with the resistors at one end of the tolerance range, your PPC is getting a little higher voltage and the thing overclocks better. Get a PM6100 with the resistors at the other end, and the voltage is lower and it does not OC so well.
But that's just a hypothesis.

Of course, this being the internet, I could also be a dog. Unless better advised, in future I will stick to the "wink" emoticon, since I don't find any emoticon for "bob head and wag tail" to indicate playfulness.

Still no progress on the P575 or 6100, but yesterday, I got an Apple branded Quantum 1.2 GB SCSI Hard Drive, an Apple branded 6 GB HD, an A9M0106 floppy drive (with data cable hacked off and missing 
) and an AppleCD 300i Plus.
I know what I'll do with the SCSI hard drive (if it works): I'll either put it in some machine and use it there or put it in an enclosure.
The floppy drive I'll probably use for parts because I already have one which works, but missing some screws (unfortunately the "new" one also is missing a few, but it still has some which my other one lacks). If the drive mechanism works, I'll clean it up and use it in some machine that's lacking a drive.
I don't know what to use the AppleCD drive for yet. Maybe I can use it for installing A/UX on something (that requires that I get an enclosure of some kind, though; it's just a bare internal drive right now). I think I'll put it in the Quadra 950 in place of the generic drive I have in there now.

Well I got the drives cleaned up (they were quite dirty), and I'm just plugging them into power to see if they spin up.
Good news is that, despite some horrible whining sounds, the SCSI drive spun right up and the heads did their self check thing, so I assume it's operable.
Same goes for the IDE one.
The AppleCD, however, I'm not sure of. There's a light on the front which comes on and glows amber while it's making some whirring sounds, then it goes green.
The tray seems to open and close normally, and it doesn't complain when a disk is inserted.
However, I don't know if it's reading the disk, because it doesn't spin up and make audible noise (except for a slight clicking sound). I think it's spinning, but I can't tell.
Any advice?

My experience is that it won't spin up and read the disk unless it is connected to a machine (properly).
I would suggest just doing a quick check by setting the SCSI ID manually, opening up a machine you have that works (any SCSI machine will do - LCs are great for this), and connecting the molex/SCSI cable and hit boot.
Be a nice quick test with no fiddling to get it installed properly.

Today I received in the mail a retail copy of Mac OS 8.5 (complete with box and cellophane overwrap!) and an LC network card.
Will the LC card work in an LC III? I don't see why not, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

It should work.
It's thinking like that which put 150 boxes (no really, I have an inventory, there's 150) in my attic. It's not all Mac stuff. Most of it is or Mac related (electronic parts for repairs or future projects).
Of course, some of the boxes are small -- 10" X 6" X 8" or some such, but many are large. There's a pretty even mix.
Yes, I know. That is why I have a bunch of junk piling up (unlike you, I don't have it inventoried very well).

Well, I guess it doesn't matter anymore...
...Because I just got an LC! It comes complete with 12" RGB monitor, keyboard, mouse, and User's Guide.
All for $50 (which probably wouldn't surprise anyone, considering how common they are). I think it needs a new hard drive (and probably new capacitors), but it appears to be in good shape overall with minor yellowing.
I also got a box full of PowerBook G4s for $140 shipped (about $28 shipped each) which I plan on fixing up (I could get at least one going as I think I might have the necessary parts left over from last year's restoration project). I'm going to probably sell most of them when I'm done (though I might keep one for myself because it's the HiRes model).
And coming soon is uniserver's Quadra 840av (I like a challenge every now and then) and possibly a G5 (I know, I know...) if I can get my act together monetarily.
As for the other stuff, I haven't done much with it yet because I've been busy with other stuff.

Well, I got the G5. It's a dual 2.0 GHz model (A1047?). It has an ADC port, if that means anything.
Unfortunately, the rear foot got mangled during shipping, so I bought a new/used case for it from eBay for $50 shipped. Hopefully that will make it as good as new.
I also got TMG's Mac Plus. Aside from a chip in the front bezel (on the top corner) and the usual yellowing, it looks to be in decent shape. I will see about fixing up the analog board and using that to fix up my other one. Then I can *finally* sell mine (I'll probably put it on LEM Swap, since there's a glut of them up here (nothing wrong with that, especially when they're free ).)
I also have coming a Quadra 650, PowerBook 150, and PB165c, courtesy of James1095.
Also in the works is (maybe) a Quadra 950 *with* drive bezels! I also have my eye on a floppy bezel and cable on eBay for the Q950 I have now.
OK, so enough about new stuff.
The Mac Classic, while now basically good as new, is still having some weird analog board issues, so I've set it aside until I can get a new one.
The 6100,likewise, has been set aside because I haven't had the time it seems.
The Mac IIcx was merged with my other one (and the remnants went to Trash for his experiments) to hopefully make a working machine. At the very least, it's complete, so that's a start (there's something to fix, in other words ).

Also, although it isn't Mac related, I finally got a new stereo for our pickup truck. The original still works okay, but the power switch doesn't work (therefore it's stuck on; the knob also likes to fall out, and since it's also the volume control, it's somewhat problematic) and the tape player's broken, two things I really wish it had. All that's left now is to replace the driver's side speaker (I replaced the passenger side one, which was terribly decayed); I have it, I just need to find some time .

Does anyone have schematics/tech manuals/service manuals for this thing?
Better yet, would anybody be willing to take a look at it for me? Uniserver pretty much threw all he had at it to no avail, and I'm not even going to try unless I get some guidance or something.
I don't really need help taking it apart; I figured that out easily enough.

What I found is graphic in nature, and I will censor photos of it for now :lol:
There is some serious corrosion, particularly on J4, a nearby IC (U2?), and various resistors and diodes. It would seem that something bad happened at one point.
I've already replaced J4 and the IC, and I'm working on replacing the other damaged components. For simplicity, I am transferring these from my other bad board with the assumption of the parts in question being OK.
Once I'm certain everything's OK, I will replace some of the capacitors, just to be safe.
It's amazing it worked at all!

I had to replace W4 (little more than a jumper), R23 and R24, U2, J4, and carefully redo a pad which lifted. I then touched up a few solder joints to ensure that they don't fail.
So far, it's working, although there's still a fair amount of rust and corrosion on a few components (including the flyback), so they'll have to be replaced sooner or later I think.
The Power circuit appears to be quite healthy; I can get it to crowbar at 5.50 volts, so that's good (it probably means the capacitors and other key components are healthy). There's no weirdness in the display, aside from the height adjustment being out of whack (probably my fault, since I fiddled with the pots while working on the board), and the alignment being slightly low.
Now all I need is a boot disk (I have those), an keyboard and a mouse.
So far, I estimate I've spent about $80 on this thing ($40 for the original unit, plus ~$35 to buy TMG's for extra parts).
I figure I could probably get about $10,000 for it on eBay :lol: :lol: :lol:

So you are using the analog board out of the one I sent you? If so very impressive! I thought out of all of the components in that computer, the analog board would be the 1 thing that would not be salvageable at all.

I'd like to find a cheap set for it somewhere, so it will be complete.

Yes, I am. I looked at it, and it seemed that it was essentially intact (and I checked a few traces which *looked* damaged to make certain, and they checked out OK), so I took a leap of faith and figured I'd try replacing a few components which seemed particularly damaged looking and see what would happen. I also figured that since the worst that could happen is nothing at all, I thought I had little to lose (also, it seemed that, since it *was* bonging, the circuitry was essentially OK, and that something minor was interfering somehow.)

Sadly, no I did not. That was another one of the drawbacks to my purchase of this Plus.
Finding a keyboard and mouse in platinum will be easier then finding a pair in beige. I'd ask in the trading post. I'm sure someone has a spare.
I also remember someone posting in the Trading Post that they had posted a pair on eBay and the price wasn't bad. I forget who it was and if it was beige or platinum.
Not really, I just did a re-cap, (de-cap/clean pads/re-cap) and swapped out the sound chip.
Acutely I didn't even wash it… maybe you should give it a good wash?
From my experience, the sound came from the Headphone jack just fine.
But no sound from the internal speaker,
and SCSI wasn't responding,
Floppy drive was not responding.
I have a hunch you could plug in some speakers.
Slap a Nubus scsi card in there
and a Nubus Video card,
It should be good to go.
Or just do what you have been doing, look for a replacement q840av mobo.

Well, since I'm not one to give up on these things, I'd like to try to fix it.

I did some more work on the Plus!
I replaced a couple more components, cleaned up the heat sinks to make them look nice, and tried to clean up the rear case.
My soldering iron broke while I was in the middle of soldering something, so I had to use my old pencil-style 30w, and I feel I did a very sloppy job with it because of a blunt tip .
The vinyl cover hides a multitude of sins, however }
Also adjusted the display a bit, so the dimensions are approximately correct, and it's reasonably centered. The brightness is OK, but I think I need to run TPG and fine tune the focus a little more.
Once I've done that, it should be ready to go.
And I'd like to thank TMG once again for making it possible (by sending me his reject-Plus).

I have tested the Plus by letting it sit for a few hours, and I found that the screen grew wider as it warmed up.
Time for a recap, I think.
Also, I was offhandedly looking at the partially disassembled Quadra 840av this evening, and I think I know why the internal speaker wasn't sounding- the surround is crumbling. I don't know if that would cause it to fail altogether, but it seems at least plausible that it could.
I have also made some progress with the G5. I put the stock 320 GB hard drive from my Mac Pro in it, and it worked fine. It runs quite Tiger well, but the fans keep ramping up when I do anything. It probably needs a) a good cleaning of the fans and heat sinks, B) new thermal paste, and c) recalibration of the temp sensors and other things which determine fan speed (how do I do this, I wonder?).
It's fine for now, though, and I'll probably do a and b when I swap to the new case (which should arrive this week). I need to do more research regarding c, though (which I will probably do first, or should I do it last?)
