Big Quadra 700 Problem
(1) The having-to-force-quit only happens when Open Transport is loaded at startup.
(2) When the computer is turned on and their is an ethernet cable connected to the card, the light on the card blinks and doesn't stop.
(3) The having-to-force-quit thing still happens with the ethernet card out so it isn't the card's fault.
(4) I found that my card was an Asante card so I installed Asante's drivers. It didn't make any difference.

Has anyone else had this happen?
If your NIC in the Quadra is 10Base-T (inevitably so if it has a Thin-net coax. connector as well as an RJ-45) and the hub (or the switch) is 10/100Base-T, the blinking LI LED shows that autonegotiation between NIC and hub/switch is failing because the NIC knows nothing about such new-fangled nonsense. (Is it a hub or a switch? There is a difference.) And the hub/switch doesn't believe that anyone could possibly be so higgerant about autonegotiation and keeps trying ...
Solution: interpose a 10Base-T hub with uplink port between the NIC and the 10/100Base-T hub/switch.
What System is on the Quadra? OT is not compatible with Systems older than 7.5.3. For such older Systems you must select Classic Networking (AppleTalk) using Network Software Selector. However, Asanté's EtherTalk Installer 5.6.1 should have made the right choice of software for your NIC based on card and System, but it would not have uninstalled any already-installed OT. If you don't need OT, put the components into a single folder and store them in say, Utilities, in case you need them for a later upgrade of System.

I'm running 7.5.5. I have a 10/100 Switch that I'm using. I just remembered I have a spare 10 hub so I can use your solution with uplink!
The blinking stopped, but the having to force quit the finder and file sharing extension at start up hasn't. Here's a picture of what happens when I try to start AppleTalk:

When Open Transport is loaded, the Monitors contol panel causes the computer to lock up! Nothing besides Monitors! That must be why I was stuck in B&W in Mac OS 8.
This is what OT does:

From what I've seen, OT causes trouble and never good (on my Q700 at least). I don't know why, but it looks unfixable to me.
I guess I'll use classic networking. I can't go higher than 7.5.5 then, but I don't care. From what I've seen, I'll need two control panels. The MacTCP control panel and the Network control panel. I think I know where to get those.

Your problem with Monitors CP may be fixed by trashing its Preferences, and then restarting. You don't need Monitors and Sound CP, and even loading it may be causing some of your problems. Shift it into Apple Extras against a future need. If you have downgraded from 8.1, was it by erase-and-install or by clean install? Your unnecessary M&C CP may reflect the presence of other undesirable CPs and extensions also.
If you are using 7.5.5, you will be better off with OT 1.1.2, which is downloadable from Apple. Be sure to install the Asanté stuff before OT 1.1.2 so that you do not get any older software than 1.1.2 re-installed.

If you have an AAUI/RJ-45 adapter (often miscalled an 'ethernet transceiver'), use that instead of the NIC. If that works, the NIC is, despite the link light, as kablooie as it is seeming to be. You may, or you may not, still need the 10Base-T hub between the 700 and your switch when you use the on-board ethernet.

When I had 8 installed the Monitors&Sound didn't work.

I don't think you can have both Monitors and Monitors & Sound on the same system. I am sure one of them is a PPC control panel. I remember from my last 7.6 install that one of them is definitely PPC only. I think there is also a Quadra video control panel or extension that you may need.

I don't mind running 7.5.0 on my Q700. It's unique startup is the best I've seen. So I guess I can hammer off the first two questions! Now it's all down to this:
Why isn't my nubus ethernet card working? I set the options correctly in it's control panels. Is there a way to get this to work or is it totally dead?

Could it be that the card is dodgy and the root of all these problems? Have you tried removing it and seeing if the other problems go away?
The other problems don't go away when I take the card out. It's hard to tell whether the card works or not because I can turn appletalk and file sharing on with the card recognized and chosen, but it doesn't actually do anything. The light representing the port on the ethernet hub the Q700 is connected to doesn't light up.

If your Asante card has a twin stake pin jumper position marked JP1 the jumper plug should be hanging off to one side, not bridging the two pins. When a good straight thru, not cross over, patch cable is connected to a good hub the green led should light even if there is no network traffic. The blinking yellow led is an indicator of any attempted traffic, not necessarily successful traffic, I think.
It has one marked JP2. Should I do anything?
Do you have a specific Asante model number marked on the card, like MacCon 610 or MC+IIET? For the 610 JP2 should also be hanging to the side not bridging, for most modern hubs. I do not have a manual for the +IIET but would guess similarly. It is really important to get that Asante solid green led on in order that any of the comm software has a chance or working. If your hub is really old and does not support link integrity JP2 might need to be bridged. A model on the Asante would help if the exact manual can be located.

Don't have the manual for that one, but on other earlier models JP1 and JP2 if present either forced one of the two ports or autosensed which port to use, and the other jumper would disable/enable the link integrity feature (disable for really old hubs predating 10base T spec only) underlying the green led. I think you can experiment with JP1 and JP2 without fear of killing any components. The usual default was jumpers not bridging for most cases, enabling autosense of which port and sensing link integrity. No green led at the Asante usually means bad cable, cable not seated deeply enough, crossover cable instead of straight thru patch cable, or hub port not powered, but could be dead Asante card also.

I installed the drivers. When I made appletalk active it said something like,"There was an error. We'll use localtalk instead." I used the Asante Troubleshooter which came with it and these were my results. They were the same when using my 10/100 switch or my 10 hub. It said if you failed the loopback test to call tech support in the manual that was also in the link you provided.

That's pretty much it unless there is a bad cable connection. You can do a really thorough visual inspection of the MCiNB board looking for leaking electrolytics, corrosion, solder shorts, and any engineering change jumper wires that might have broken off, but right now a spare board to try would really be nice. That comment about excessive collisions sounds more like a hardware failure than a mis-configuration or bad connection.
Given the choice between replacing the NIC card and finding an AAUI dongle, I'd go for a dongle. It keeps one of your few Nubus slots free. If you ever manage to pick up a PPC upgrade, you're going to lose the use of one of the Nubus slots because the PPC board intrudes on it's physical space and you only get two to start with and you don't want the one that's left taken up with something that you can use one of the peripheral ports for.
The card does look a bit fishy… There's actually a video card in one of the slots. It doesn't work with my monitor because the resolutions don't match up. Keeping my nubus slots free sounds like a great idea. I forgot they made dongles. There are often very interesting looking nubus cards around and it will be nice to have slots open.
BTW, if anyone figures out why those other things weren't working, I'd be happy to know.

I don't see the problem in keeping software that comes installed on a hard drive IF it is something that is no longer readily available for purchase. You mean to say that if I am searching for a rare piece of software for years and buy a computer that happens to have it installed on it's hard drive I'm expected to erase it?? I don't think so. If the copyright holder wants to re-release it for sale, then fine, I'll do my best to come up with the money to buy it, but if they insist on keeping it off the market for whatever reason, I'm keeping it. Since they aren't selling it anyway, it does not hurt them in the least if I continue to use it because it is not a lost sale. They can argue that it prevents me from buying the latest version, but how can I buy the latest version when it runs on OS X and the computer I am running the older version on can't run OS X? How can they claim damages from the use of a piece of software that isn't even being sold??
