Three fer Free!
Well 'twas almost quittin time and my boss says "Follow me."
He brings me into one of the labs and reaches up onto a shelf and pulls down THREE!! supposedly broken apple laptops. considering the last "broken" laptop i received from them worked just fine, i was more than eager to get my hands on em.

its a 500MHz TiBook, 700MHz 14" G3 iBook (on which somebody did a HORRIBLE job of repairing the monitor...i'm going to look at it first), and a 400MHz PowerBook G3 Lombard.
I don't know if any of them actually work as i'm still in the process of rebuilding my 867MHz TiBook featured in this thread. I'll finish it before i start any other projects.
anyways....i'm psyched

well the TiBook in particular looks roughed up. somebody managed to actually shove the headphone jack INTO the laptop, so i'm going to open it first and expect the worst and hope for the best.
however, before any of that i'm going to try and get the iBook working as i am hoping to give it to my second youngest sister as a gift, so out of all of them its the only one i really want to get working in the end if nothing else.

That's how I got a perfectly fine Dell Dimension 2.4ghz tower a while back for free. I was told it did not work. I got it home and it booted right up.Why, when someone gives me 'broken' hardware is actually broken? Bah humbug
What a find, and free too! They will probably be fine but if they don't work at least the parts will be useful.
yeah thats what i figured. i should be done with the 867 TiBook on thursday (i'm going out of town tonight and tomorrow) so i should be able to take a look at em on friday or saturday.
Grrrr... "Broken Computer - FREE!" around here means that someone probably let the dog piddle on it or something and it released the magic smoke...

Seems that everyone is finding a PowerBook G3 here, but when I actually NEED one (for school and upcoming work/job), the only ones around are $400 AUD on eBay.

I found a 6400 a similar way though. It had "DEAD" written across the top of the case, the IT staff thought it was dead, but when I got it home, it booted right up off an OS 9 CD and successfully installed the OS to the HD. Works like a dream.

yeah same with my 500MHz Pismo. was given to me by the same guy, and it initially did not boot.
all i really did was reset it, i took out the battery, disconnected the power adapter, and took out the p-ram battery and hit the power button a few times to make sure there was no current stored anywhere.
plugged everything back in and bam! free top-of-the-line G3 powerbook

No way - maybe an upgraded Pismo, but Wallstreets pop up there for far less. Otherwise, you could probably get a much cheaper old PB on Mactalk (my "dead" Pismo cost me $50). Unlike eBay, people are willing to let things go for less to another Mactalk member

I'm over on MacTalk as well, i'll have to post a WTB and get some cash together. My target is "Anything that can boot OS X (10.3 Preferred)".
sorry to say it MacG4, but that TiBook has one really serious problem, namely this. That crack was causing the top metal plate to push down on top of the headphone jack which caused the entire motherboard to bend. I don't think it caused any permanent damage, but that is going to have to be repaired before it goes anywhere (I still don't know if I'm going to sell it working or no).
I'm a bit worn out on big repair jobs (any of you tried to take an iBook completely apart? its like friggin brain surgery with all the damn screws...) so i will get to it later on in the week. right now...i'm gettin breakfast.
alright here's a pic of the almost-final repair job on the audio jack port. that big glob of epoxy near the top of the bezel will be sanded down as close as i can get without screwing up the paint (too much anyway), but inside its damn near perfect. can't even see the fibreglass mesh i have there in the epoxy and its a very strong bond. it won't be breaking again anytime soon.
What's the dealio with the Lombard? I got a Wallstreet II recently in need of a backlight repair. I would imagine the insides of both are probably somewhat similar if you have any pics.
its still sitting in the corner untouched. i wanted to get through the ibook and the tibook first. i'll get to the lombard probably near the end of the week.
alright well i've gotten the tibook 90% of the way back together. i thought i would be done today, but then the plastic clip which is glued inside the bottom metal bezel came unglued, so now i've got to epoxy that lol.

Alright well it's running! and i've also got a pic of the other TiBook i repaired recently here.

I also took the pictures with my new (and possibly permanent depending on how i like it) Canon Powershot G6. The one i was using before was a G2 and i absolutely love it, but the extra pixels and blah blah of the G6 are tempting. I'll use it for awhile before finalizing my decision.
One thing's for sure i like the build of the G2 better, feels more solid. the G6 feels more like a toy. and it STILL sucks at low-light shots.
