that statement doesn't really mean anything. for all you know, the guy could have 802.11a router and 802.11b receiver and wondering why the heck it doesn't work.

But anyway, to answer your question, yes, you can connect to any 802.11b or 802.11g (soon to come) open nodes with Airport. If you like, feel free to start war-chalking (I'm thinking 'bout it ^_^

Just remember, if you use WAP (put in a password) to your network, when you enter it in on your Mac, you need to put a $ in front of it.

Let's not be picky! I think anyone who's got a 802.11a router (i.e. an early adapter!) MUST know the basics of 802.11x where x = a,b,g, etc.

Not to be pedantic, but it's "WEP," short for "Wired Equivalent Privacy." This is the mysterious and sometimes dreaded encryption that is included in the 802.11b standard. Definitely enable it and use a good password. A lot of people poo-poo this, with the excuse that it can be broken (not by you or me, and not in real time, but yes, it can be broken) so it's useless. WRONG. War chalking is the process of identifying open wireless networks (through War Driving or even War Walking-wandering around with your wireless laptop and special software, just looking for open networks), and then marking them, as with chalk on a curb, or sometimes a map that's privately circulated among people who get their kicks out of using other people's networks. Yes, use it-it isn't really difficult.

Nebrie is right-if you enter hexidecimal characters (copied from your other computer's settings, for example)you have to use the "$" in front of them to tell the AirPort software how to use them-they'll be seen as plain text otherwise. However, if you're using an iBook or PowerBook and an AirPort Base Station, just as long as you enter the same text, they will interpret the inputs identically and they will talk.

Nothing specific, but perhaps something at http://wirelessdriver.sourceforge.net/ would work for you. If not, contact the folks there. They're happy to hear from anyone with questions and will give you a straight answer, not like the wireless card manufacturers who say, "We're currently evaluating the issue of developing an OS X solution...." B*stards. If I hear that from one more vendor I just might end up in a bell tower somewhere with my rifle.
