Does my 3rd party wireless router need to be updated to support Rendezvous?
I have a linksys wireless router and I am wondering if the router will have to be updated to supoort Rendezvous. I just got this idea as Apple updated the Airport base stations to support Rendezvous. If this is the case I don't ever see an update for Rendezvous from LinkSys and the coolest feature of 10.2 will go to waste.
rendezvous is completely based on TCP/IP networking packets. if your wireless router can pass those packets, i don't see why it wouldn't work w/ rendezvous.
btw, i have no idea what apple's airport update does to make the base station compatible w/ rendezvous. as far as i know, it already is.

I thought it was strange also, perhaps it has something to do with rendezvous working properly over Airport. lets hope you are right.

I think you'll find that the update enables the airport itself to participate in ad-hoc networks. That is that you'll be able to see a rendevous enabled airport pop up, and be able to access it by name etc.
All traffic will pass over it seamlessly in bridging mode, however I think rendevous may use the 10.x.x.x address space (I don't remember, so don't flame me) and so there may be a little update with the routing side of the airport.
Incedentally, a little birdie told me that the old graphite basestation doesnt contain enough RAM to run the newer software. This is why we are unlikely to see airport updates for the graphite other than bug fixes.

rendezvous uses the 224.0.0.x space from what i've observed
i think u r right there about the ad-hoc idea.

Plug and play. No configuration. You get the airport out the box, plug it in, it will discover your (rendevous enabled) cable or DSL modem, set itself up, and allow rendevous enabled hosts internet access with no configuration.
(when the rest of the world catches up with apple and implements rendevous)
