Networking DeskJet 970 with JetDirect 300X on OS X
I have a HP DeskJet 970Cse printer with a HP JetDirect 300X 10/100 Print Server. I purchased the print server to enable me to use my multiple computers to print to the 970 without the need for a computer to be on and set as a server.
That said, I have been using my 970 in this configuration for about two years under Mac OS 9. Yesterday I upgraded my desktop (G4/733) to Mac OS X.2 and am unable to print to my printer. I installed the 1.3 printer drivers from HP and also installed the drivers shiped on the second CD of Jaguar, in case those were newer. Initially I was able to see the printer in the Add Printer dialog box under AppleTalk and selected it. I was even able to print the word "test" from TextEdit. After this though, any time I hit print in any application, that Application would crash. Noting this as a problem, I attempted to re-select the printer, but it was no longer found. So, I decided to try re-installing each set of printer drivers while attempting to find the printer after each selection (HP and then OS X.2's for HP). When that didn't work, I used HP's uninstaller and the reinstalled. All actions proved useless. Nonetheless, OS 9 printing still works perfectly.
Does anyone have a configuration that is remotly similar to mine? If so, how do you have it configured?
I was thinking that perhaps I could print via IP printing, since the JetDirect 300X supports that, but I do not believe that the driver supports this. I thought that if I could specify the exact IP address that I could tell OS X where the server is and not have it look it up. Additionally, I do have the server's AppleTalk address if that could be useful.
Does anyone have any suggestions to try or know of what might be going on here?

Printer Sharing over a network is one bugaboo of OS X. There is no easy solution, short of waiting for Jaguar. Supposedly it will be fixed in 10.2. You can sometimes get it to work by running Printer Sharing in Classic. I found that to be hit or miss, and often sleep kills it. I needed to boot into OS 9, set up Printer Sharing and test it, then reboot into OS X, start Classic, double-check that the settings for Printer Sharing stayed active, and then pray. Wish I had a better solution for you, but hopefully this will all go away in a few weeks.
My last post was based on my experiences with wireless network printer sharing. After rereading your original post I realize you never mentioned printing over an AirPort network.
Perhaps something simple but overlooked is your fly in the ointment. Did you go to Applications > Utilities > Print Center? Your printer should be listed there, and if not that could be the problem. I checked Apple's Printer Compatability List and the 970 is listed, but no mention of the JetDirect 300X 10/100 Print Server. HP's page for the print server makes no mention of OS X compatability either.
Perhaps you could try networking the printer through your Mac without the JetDirect unit? Worth a try, and if you're not networking wirelessly it just might work.

The G4 is actually hooked via an Ethernet switch to the JetDirect box and therefore not utilizing wireless networking, but I wanted to illustrate that it really does work fine over the network in 9 and in fact over the network wirelessly.. I'm just not sure why it initatlly showed up, but no longer appears, despite nothing different happening to the device itself. HP says that network printing is supported for the printer with X's release, but I'm not sure why it isn't showing up.

Is Classic running now? Everything I see points to a failing of OS X where printers is concerned, and solutions seem to center on running everything through Classic. That is, until Jaguar ships.
You'll have a difficult time making it work by just using a jet direct and OS X. LPR printing thru X.1 isn't very good. You could try a workaround for this as I did. I got an old beater intel machine and loaded mandrake linux on it. Then I installed appletalk. I was able to print over my network to the linux machine and it sent the print job to my printer. In your case you can have the linux machine send the print job over your network to you jetdirect. I was printing from my Mac OS 10.1 to an HP laserjet 4 using this setup. The printing method Linux uses is called CUPS. This is why Jaguar is supposed to make it easier to print because Apple has licensed CUPS for use in 10.2.

It sounds like you might have ended up with a bad mix of the 1.3 HP driver and the 1.4.1 driver from Jaguar's disc #2. I'd remove everything in the /Library/Printers directory. Then reinstall the printer drivers from Jaguar CD #2.
The new drivers that came out a couple of days ago seemed to fix the issues! Thanks for your support everyone!!
