AirPort 1 vs. 2 vs. 3? (basestations)

Ok, going to college, got a DVI tibook. I want a wireless net connection. my question:

Is the Airport 2.0 basestation that much worth it than Airport 1...and, does it seem like there will be a revision to the ABS anytime soon?

Also, they've had the same Airport Cards for a while now...are these products likely to get upgraded, or are they pretty much a feature that doesn't change much?

(I just don't want to buy an airport card for 100 bucks or so now and hear about a new card that has double range or something...)

I do think that for most people, the new (snow) base station is superior. However, use on a college network is one time when the old one is sometimes superior, since it can link AppleTalk to the WAN port (for printing or file sharing).

Actually, I do suspect that updated AirPort will come out in the not-too-distant future, because many companies are now selling hybrid 802.11b (11Mbps) & 802.11a (54Mbps) wireless systems now. It stands to reason (especially since Apple buys the guts of AirPort equipment from another company, Lucent, anyway) that they will follow suit.

So if you can afford to wait, do so and just go buy a long ethernet cable!

Thanks tooki...I've got an ethernet cable, i just like the wireless idea. Seems like more and more hot spots will be coming up in the next year. Plus I'll be at Santa Clara U...right near silicon valley...

Anyway, your post leads to another question of mine:
What are the differences between 802.11a/b/g. At least I think I heard somewhere there is a (g)... I see (a) is 54 while (b) is only 11...but doesn't (b) cover a farther range?

b = 11Mbps, 2.4GHz
a = 54Mbps, 5GHz, similar range to b, but incompatible.
g = 54Mbps, 2.4GHz, shorter range than b, but compatible.

Theres also a c,d,h,i and a whole host of others.
