All Airport, All the time?
I just moved and the layout of my new apartment is such that my desk is at the complete opposite side of the room where the phone jack is. Currently I'm running a 20' patch cord from the jack to my router, but this is just a short term solution... it's only a matter of time before I trip over it! I have a wireless router and an airport card in my ibook, and I think the best thing to do is to just move the router next to the phone jack and go wireless from there. But I'm a little concerned having my ibook AND the airport on all the time.
Has anyone else gone totally airport for their primary connection to the internet? If so what was your experience?
Also, for the more technically inclined people out there I have two quick questions:
#1 - is there any harm in having the airport card on 24/7 (i.e. burning out, loss of signal after a period of time, etc)
#2 - are there any other security precautions I should take? Currently, I use WEP, and run the firewall built into X, but I wonder if there's anything else I can do to make it harder to break into my little machine.

I have an iBook, Powerbook, 3 G4s, and an iMac all using wireless internet all the time. Setting up the Airport is very easy to do, took almost no time what so ever. The Internet did not seem to slow down either. The only time I can tell a difference is when playing a game like Quake 3 or RtCw online while trying to surf the web on a different computer at the same time. None of my Aiport cards have ever burnt out, broke, or anything like that. I have the Aiport set up to use WEP and it seems to work fine.
I don't know if all base stations offer this feature or not, but if you're concerned about others being able to tap into your wireless LAN, D-link wireless access points offer the option of using the AirPort card hexadecimal ethernet address to prevent unauthorized access, in addition to WEP.
you can always click on the airport menu item and turn it off.
why would you not want to have it on all the time? you still use wired ethernet while your ibook is airported?
