I hope you got some powerful flamerepellant.
While Oswald's post looks like flame bait indeed, there are a couple of grains of truth in there.

If I'd be an Arab I'd be mightily pissed off about the United States supporting a regime that so frequently violates human rights.

Agreed. It is frightenin that it seems like the US willingly looks the other way while Israel is breaking international laws. This is probably one of the main reasons there is this much hatred of the US in the middleeast. We all know for example that building permanent settlements in occupied areas is illegal. But how can we enforce Israel to withdraw when the US puts its blessing on it or rather does not push on Israel to withdraw.

But soon we will see the POV of "bizarro baseless accusations" and co. and this will turn into yet another flamefest.

Government. At least call it a government. Israel is a democracy with an elected government. By calling it a regime you are making a transparent value judgement. As a rule of thumb, the difference between a government and a regime is that a regime does not have the legitimacy of democratic government. Thus South Korea has a government, while North Korea has a regime.

Of course, there are gray areas inbetween. I think it would have been fair to call South Africa a regime, and also Rhodesia in the Smith years, and Zimbabwe under Mugabe. That's because they have the trappings of democracy without the reality of a universal franchise.

Israel, on the other hand, has both the trappings of democracy, and the reality. There are Arab Moslems with Israeli citizenship, Christians with Israeli citizenship, as well as Jews with Israeli citizenship. They all get to vote, and their votes are all counted. Therefore, it is proper to call the elected government of Israel a government, not a regime.
You're right. I didn't think.

Simey,

Another well-reasoned post. However, IMO I will consider Israel to be a fully "democratic" government when those 762,000 Palestinian refugees are allowed to return to their homes and land given the same rights as Israeli citizens.

Of course, the "government" of Israel has no intention of ever allowing this to happen because then the European Ashkenazi Jews that control the country would be a minority and could be outvoted in a democratic system. On top of that, a lot of them would have to give up the lands and homes that they stole ... or at a minimum pay compensation.

In my view, the Arab Israeli citizens are being used as tokens by the European Jewish "majority" to give the appearance of democracy ... when the reality is that the government is a lot more similar to the apartheid regime of S. Africa ...especially when considering its activities in the Occupied Territories and other policies with respect to the sale of land to non-Jews, etc. .... than most in the West would like to believe.

OAW
This is a political thread. Why is it not in the other forum?
The question you need to ask yourself is. If the Palestinians was to leave Israel alone, from the start. How much of this would have Israel been doing? Most of this is directly caused by Palestinian terrorism.
I find it interesting that a very small people group (compared to the massive Arab population all over the region) commands a lot more power.

Not that I hope this happens, but perhaps if all the ridiculously rich oil Arabs (mostly the dictators and leaders in the region) had an organized style of government, they may be able to take on Israel. If that ever happened, Israel would be a hole in the ground.

Ain't never gonna happen though. I would be afraid to mess with God's people.

Probably wouldn't happen as Israel has nuclear weapons and has shown they are willing to use them, but anything is possible.

Ask Nasser how well the United Arab Republic worked out.
Oh, good old ODL... always trolling...

Maybe the reason we aren't concerned about Israel is because they aren't run by madmen like Saddam and Arafat.

It's run by a war criminal instead, eh? Where's the difference?

The difference is that he's white (European)] and he's on "our side" (allied with the West).

Even though most Westerners hate to admit it ... it's really as simple as that.

Trolling? How So? Because I said that if the Palistianians would have left Israel alone from the start, none of this would be happening? Because I gave my opinion on the matter? I find it humorous you consider that trolling. Really, I do. Now this post,... this post is a troll.

There is a difference.

Couldn't that same reasoning be used in about a million instances in mankind's history? Hasn't almost every nation been established at someone else's expense?

What about all the Jews that were forcefully expelled from Arabian lands and their property seized? And they were valuable members of their communities for centuries. There was an actual term for the dispersal but I can't recall it right now.

How's the Native American situation out there in St Louis? Still on the reservations?

You may make points in other areas but I hardly think anybody has the right to be self-righteous when it comes to appropriating land and establishing a nation-state. It's the story of civilization. Not to say it's acceptable in this or any case but it seems to be fact of life.
