I still say they should have offered a compromise after the ultimatum was issued. US said Saddam should step down. Iraq said Bush should step down. In my mind, it would have been fair to have Bush, Cheyney, Rumsfeld, and the speaker of the house step down in exchange for Saddam and his family.

That leaves Colin Powel to take the presidency, right?

Actually, it would be the Speaker of the House and then the senior senator, but yeah I like the idea. Good thing Strom isn't the senior Senator anymore. Good ole Strom !

Damn, he comes after the president pro tempore of the Senate. Succession goes like this:
  • VP
  • speaker of the house
  • president pro tempore of the senate
  • Secretary of State
  • Secretary of the Treasury
  • Secretary of Defense
  • Attorney General
  • Secretary of the Interior
  • Secretary of Agriculture
  • Secretary of Commerce
  • Secretary of Labor
  • Secretary of Health and Human Services
  • Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
  • Secretary of Transportation
  • Secretary of Energy
  • Secretary of Education
  • Secretary of Veterans Affairs
D'oh, I was hoping if I scanned down far enough I would see my name. I'm technically not eligible right now, but I'm sure by the time I could scan down to my name, I would be .

Anyone know why the list only delves into the elected legislator three times? I'm getting curious. Seems like that list would start into the electoral college before it got into the Senate or House again! And that would be scary.

Make that twice. The reason is because the house and senate can always elect new leaders from within their numbers, so the others would only be called upon if congress didn't have time to elect a new leadership between when the speaker/pres pro tempore resigned and when the pres by succession dies or something. In fact, as a practical matter, it really goes through the entire house and senate before it goes through the cabinet, unless all of congress is killed or something.
