The new Iraqi Flag

The flag raised over the statue was the pre-Gulf War flag that Saddam did away with. It seems that some Iraqis may have decided.

At the Dearborn protest somebody was flying a red flag that a commentator mentioned was Iraq's pre-Saddam flag...

Is that true? Perhaps that flag should be used?

I have no idea, but presumably that man kept hold of it for the last 15 years. So maybe there is some feeling of attachment to it.

On the other hand, I saw a house here in DC flying the old 48 star US flag. Are Americans as a whole sentimental about that flag, or did he just have something against Alaska and Hawaii?

What does the 'old 48 star' US Flag look like? I don't remember seeing it. (I'm a Reagan era kid)

And what does the pre Gulf War Iraqi flag look like?

First, the flag was pretty big. It must have been 8 feet long, stretched out across a the front porch of the house. But secondly, it is easy to tell a 48 star flag from a 50.

The 50 star flags have the stars laid out in an alternating pattern (below).

Actually, my own grandparents stuck to their 48-star flag, for some reason. I think maybe they were less than excited about Alaska and Hawaii, or maybe they were just too cheap to buy another flag. ...

So, if Peurto Rico ever joins the states, that would make for 51, which would make for a difficult number to make a pattern out of...

The talk for years has been PR & DC simultaneously. The thinking is that one tends toward the Republicans while the other is solidly Democrat.

It'll never happen though, despite the fact that the DC council makes me drive around with "Taxation Without Representation" on my tags.

I can't believe that DC would ever become a state. Having electoral votes is one thing, but becoming an official state would just seem weird. I like how it is set up now, even though the Democrats get three free points at presidential election time.

Did anyone else notice that the fellows trying to tack up the old Iraqi flag (on the pedestal from which the statue had been yanked) didn't seem to be sure which side was up? First they had the red side up, then the black.

The American had him beat, sticking his flag upsidedown, however breifly. I am not even American, but even I know that the stars go at the top.

I think this one would be nice...It's happy and not too threatening.
