It's quite amazing how you sinply can't accept that there is an opinion out there different than your own. In truth, you Cash, just don't understand. I hope you enjoy giving tons of money to "the man" or stealing money from the musical artists you love so much. XM is cheaper and it supports the artists who normally don't get exposure.

XM is not going out of business any time soon. Sirius on the other hand...

XM is still cheaper than buying all that equipment and continuing to buy CDs.

In my opinion, listening to "free" radio stations with 35 minutes of the same loud-mouth irritating used car dealer talk about the latest exclusive from the factory sales incentive is assinine. Paying for commercial free radio is quite awesome. It's such a pittance too. C'mon $10, I give the bums more than that each week for cigs and booze.

get a cd changer or a mp3 cd player and play music that you OWN! invest that money in your favorite artists instead of some soon to go out of business satelite radio company.

my smartest idea of the day?

Get a ipod and a Dr.Bott car kit for it. Best of all worlds.
O.K. the comment about paying for cable was dumb. I am very happily married and I probably wouldn't be if I cancelled cable TV. I really don't mind about the cable bill, cause I love being married. If I were singel though, I would cancel cable and buy a home XM unit too.

I think I already pointed out clearly how XM is VERY MUCH cheaper than buying all of that equipment to replace my stereo. Plus I'd hate wasting my time to make my own mix CDs. I'd still have to deal with changin CDs and with the way people are driving today I simply don't like being that distracted with it.

XM is the greatest for cross country trips. We will be able to listen to the same stations throughout the entire trip. We cancelled our plans to fly this summer and are going to drive now because of XM.

QUIT PAYING FOR CABLE, and purchase a new stereo for your car that can play MP3 CDs. Up to 10 hours of music on ONE cd. And it's all YOUR music. Just think, on a cross country road trip you'd need less than 10 CDs. easy.

Enjoy.

PPS: I do understand. Paying for 'radio' is just ridiculous, and goes against the idea of radio itself.
... people seem to keep forgetting that the ipod isn't just good for use in the car - unlike xm radio. The ipod can be taken with you anywhere you go, it holds not just music, but any other files you need to carry around with you.

So when you do price comparrisons between radio and the ipod remember what the ipod gives you besides "just music in the car".
simply not true. It may not go well on the train, but take a look at this:

That is the big problem with Sirius, though. They simply do not support in-home use. I would probably subscribe to them, too, if this were an option. But it ain't.
wait a second, can you plug in headphones to that reciever, or do you have to lug around that boombox with you? If so the comparison is completely off.

Regardless, you still forget the data advantage of the ipod. You can carry gigs of data, backups, or even applications with you.

Sorry, but unless there's a hard drive attachment for the radio you seem to be out of luck.
My point was that XM is not only for the car. There is a hacked version of a XM walkman, but I admit it is quite bulky. It can be listened anywhere you have a repeater or a view of the southern sky.

Portable storage? An iPod is $500 for 20 GB. An 80 GB firewire drive is about $200 I still have $300 left.

You OWN those CDs. You OWN the iPod.

The whole point of the ipod is that it fits in your pocket, have fun toting a firewire drive around. The small size is what makes it worth it. Have you seen those "pocket drives"? They cost much more than a normal firewire drive due to their size.

Basically, it all depends on what you want to do with your device. If you just want music in the car the xm radio sounds like a good deal. Once you start wanting to listen to it on your home stereo or on a seperate boombox you have to add $80 and $100 respectively, to the price of the system.

So $130 for the receiever, $80 more to listen in your car, $80 more to listen on your home stereo, and $100 more if you want a "portable" boombox. Sounds like $390 to me (and that's without the subscription), and still it is not nearly as flexible as an ipod.

So, if music in the car is all you want then go with xm. But if you'd rather be able to be flexible with how you use your device, and use it for reasons other than music alone, get an ipod.

her mentioned portable storage as an extra option

IPOD:
 mp3 walkman
 car stereo mp3 player
 portable hardrive

XM RADIO PLAYER:
plays subscription satelite radio in your car

the wayi see it, the XM thing is not terrible but i would rather have free radio and my ipod rather than just XM.

DJ? Okay, which part of my post did you not understand? The "iPod" part?

Learn to read.
Why listen to the radio, where you do not get to CHOOSE what you listen to?

I'm sorry, but I've never heard a radio station I liked.

Maybe if Massinova or ChroniX Agression broadcasted over the air, but they do not.

Anyway, the things aren't available in Australia, so meh. Until they are, they've got nothing.

You don't need to get upset over it.. I was simply saying that it's a pain for some people to have to mix their own music (that's what a DJ does). I'd rather pay someone else to do it, because its more convenient that way.

i understand that is your opinion but the radio industry has been going relativly strong since the day it was offered.

the vast majority of people on earth knows of atleast one radio station that is enjoyable to them

the radio experience to me is not worth paying for, free radio satisfies me but yes i think the radio offers something that a ipod can never offer a human mind behind each playlist
.

Though I guess some people would rather pay to have a corporation tell them what to listen to. Such a sad world. Oh, well. To each their own.

"What are we going to eat for dinner tonight?"

"I don't know, let's turn on the TV and find out... there's bound to be a commerical on soon."

"C'mon, kids... we're going to McDonalds!"

dude

i am the first one to reccomend the ipod in this thread!!!!!!

anyway - by human brain i meant:

the anniversary of Kurt cobain death: so the radio dj knows this and plays some classic nirvana

the anniversary of a obscure led zeppelin fact: so they play the LZ song that has the most significance

madonna has a new song: so the dj compares it with a reminiscent track from madonna 's first album

pearl jam has a new cover: dj compares it with the original song

i understand that everybody makes playlists with their thinking caps on but it is not truly as "random" as a dj with a huge record base and a human brain

I think you have double standards regarding this issue. The practise of paying a corporation money in order to get entertainment and/or a convenient service is something everybody does. Whether you're buying a book, a car, a movie ticket, a newspaper, shoes, food, a computer, etc, you are paying for a big corporation to provide you with some convenient service.

If your principles were consistent in this manner, you would make your own clothing, grow your own food, build your own car, etc. But I doubt you do any of this, because it is too much of a hassle. So you, yourself, have fallen prey to "evil" corporations who profit from offering you services.
My word, you are all dorks. One guy says how much he likes his new XM setup in his car, and that he highly recommends it. Then people procede to tell him that he is a idiot for paying for music, he should just buy an iPod and steal it, not minding the fact that this guy probably thought about that, and chose to go the XM route. He then explains his reasoning, but you then say "I would never pay for radio, and anybody that does is an idiot! Sucker! You've bought into the corporate lies and have been brainwashed!"

Does this sound like eigth grade?

actually, it does remind me of eighth grade. I guess some people never grow out of their "I'm an enlightened punk who always goes against the system" phase
