Well, the pizza is a matter of taste, so nothing to say about that, but a note about the hot dog vendors. They WILL try to rip you off and charge you $2.50 or something for a hot dog. Either just tell them that you're from New York and to quit trying to rip you off (they should be $1.50 max) or go to Papaya King if you want a hot dog. It's this weird place, but it's SO good. 86th and 3rd. And it's way cheaper. Good drinks too.
And yeah, RENT is terrible. I was this close to walking out.

Why Toys-R-Us? FAO Scwartz man! Fifth & 60th or around there I believe.

Mostly at night...but in the evening and during the daytime it's perfectly safe. My friend has walked crosstown through the park at 1 AM without any issues. Obviously it's wise to be careful, but it's really not that big a deal. This isn't Morningside Park.

And yeah, FAO is so much better than Toys R Us. Note the $30,000 toy Hummer that drives on real gas and is street legal in Alabama.

Crap! Another one I forgot! DEFINITELY go to this...it's HUGE! Just to give you an idea, there's a full sized ferris wheel you can ride INSIDE THE STORE! A Barbie house big enough to walk through, a T-Rex bigger than most homes...it's insane!
BTW, it's in Times Sqaure, can't miss...hugeeeee LCD's in front w/ a giant giraffe on it.

Ehh, Morningside Heights is one of the safer areas as long as you don't go up much higher than, well, my school
The park is pretty too. Way uptown it does begin to get a little sketchy, though.

I like Patsy Grimaldi's on Old Fulton Street, under the Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn. Pairs nicely with a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (<--not to be missed).
Best pizza in Manhattan, IMHO, is Cavallo's, on Seventh Avenue at 28th Street, near F.I.T.

If you like steak, you could try Peter Luger's. It's one of the more famous steakhouses and it's supposed to be absolutely incredible. Supposedly the best steak in America. CAUTION, though, it's EXPENSIVE and you have to pay *cash*. If you're going with two people I'd bring about $200 just to be safe...I've never eaten there so I dunno what the prices are. Book well in advance and I believe the Porterhouse Steak for Two is highly recommended. Also, don't ask for your steak well done. I don't think they like it. Even if you don't normally take steak rare, I think that's the way it's recommended at Peter Luger; it'll just end up being better. It's in Brooklyn, incidentally. Anyway. I've never been there, so this is purely based on reputation and comments from people I know.

Luger's is fun and really good, but a) reservations are a necessity, and b) bring $300. Walk north from there for the achingly-hip neighborhood of Williamsburg.

| Walk around in Central Park. It's a really beautiful park, especially in early evening during a weekday, because it's almost empty. The views of the city are incredible in some parts, and it's just a very nice place to walk around. |
also do a search; there was a "what to do in New York" thread last spring, I think.
ok, I have more info!
I'm flying in thurs evening at around 6 pm. Fly out Sat morning, early.
staying on 95th street in manhattan.
Then, the 23rd I fly in midday, and I'm staying on long island. I fly out again the 24th in early afternoon.
BTW all, I have been to new york, many times, so I know my way around, and I've seen many of the big tourist things.
Deli has to be kosher. Not kosher style, fully certified kosher. I won't eat their otherwise.
Thanks for all the suggestions, and keep them coming. I'm leaning towards central park, and going to see some show friday night. Not sure what else yet.
Apple store is out, for sure. We have computer stores here. Seen one, seen them all.
As for the baseball game, I watched the mets play the diamonbacks two days ago, on sunday. They got whipped

1. Get a $1 hot dog from the dirtiest street vendor you can find. You will enjoy it. Guaranteed. (It's one of those New York things).
2. Eat at the White Castle across the street from the Empire State Building.
3. Apple SoHo.
4. Go to the Herald Square subway station (where Broadway crosses 6th Av at 34th St). Some of the best music/dance performances you'll ever see in there.
5. Times Square is pretty cool, too.

Maybe so but from what I hear the SOHO Apple store is a bit nicer than most of your run of the mill computer/ Apple stores
Thx for all the suggestions.
My flight leaves in a few hours, and I'll see how many things I can do once I get there.

Have fun...you luckyyyyy....
If you like sushi, eat at Blue Ribbon Sushi on Sullivan street. It has both the best sushi and hands down the most friendly service I have ever had.
Other fun things to do if you've never been to NYC:
The MET - you could spend an entire day and not even see half of it
The American museum of natural history
Intrepid (mentioned earlier)
Bronx Zoo
Bronx Botanical Gardens

A backup power generator might be a good item to pack if it's not too late <ZING>

a Flashlight and extra batteries.
Soo, I'm in new york, I've had the experience of standing in line for three hours waiting for a cab, no water, no power, so anything I can do?
This is fun

I'll be in manhattan, somewhere around 77th street, I think (I don't know where I'm staying yet). Also, what is there to do? This was a pretty spontaneous trip (got plane tickets maybe 2 weeks ago, don't even know where I'm staying yet, etc.), so I have no plans. Clubs and drinking and things of that nature are out. Other then that, suggestions are welcome. |
Just remember to keep your hands in the car at all times.
Man... I was suppose to go to NY for spring break to visit a friend of mine, but the person who's suppose to go with me can't go anymore, and I don't want to go by myself because my friend in NY work during the day, so than I'll be by myself... So I decided not to go.

wow - why the long wait for a cab? I am going to be in NYC in 7 weeks time and this doesn't sound at all well.
I can't decide whether to stay in the village or soho - any suggestions?
gorgonzola - how can you recommend "A long day's journey into the night"? It is *the* worst, most boring play ever to be given breath. It has the honour of being the first play I ever walked out on half way through. I would rather watch re-runs of 'reality tv' than sit through that again.

There's dead threads, then there's DEAD threads.
simonjames, check the date of my post vs what happened then
My flight was one of the last to land when the power went out. They closed the airport, so everyone had to get out somehow. The line of people waiting for cabs was over half a mile long (seriously).
Since the city had no power, it took hours for it to clear out. Then the cabs could run a bit.
It's not normally that bad.
I'll probably end up in New York again this summer. Never did get my pizza.
Oh yeah, and I did have a flashlight in my pocket, and a bigger one in my backpack. Most useful

I assume you mean the one in Times Square which has a feris wheel, not Herald square which is simply awful (or Union square for that matter which is just a store)
