Peecee weenies (rant...)
Good gawd.... it's so frustrating around some of these ppl. i usually steer away from any techie question unless theyre truely interested in learning about Macs (as opposed to ppl who just like to diss macs).
And for petes sake.... here's the situation. i got to a friends house and was asked if id like to hook up my powerbookG4 to a projector for iTunes visualizations, and a couple of cool clips i got on here for the new years bash. i agreed... havent seen the projjector yet. i thought it was a cool idea...make the party more 'clubbish'.
Anywho so today a friend of the host comes over whoe work in IT support (a windows man by choice...aka retard
).
So i just keep my mouth shut cause this dude has 20+ years on me..so i show him the visualizations.... and i get questions like... are you sure ull be abe to connect it to the projector... now...neither one of us have seen the projector and he hasnt seen the powerbook.
The my friend (whos clueless in the ways of teh computer) asks me to show him the visualizations in iTunes... i did. Thenext 5 minutes we had to hear how great the visualizations in that 'other program' on WinXP was.
At the end of the 30 minutes of B.S... listening to them argue as to whether they can use a 'Serial port' (isnt that what they used for printers in olden times ?)or S-Video or a VGA cable to hook up their laptops to the projector or use component video....the pc guy had my friend convinced that he aught to bring his laptop over... just in case..... lol....
ive never felt above ppl in any way... but i do like the feeling of being an eagle and soaring over these dimwitts lol.
I wasnt gonna give assurance as to whether or not it was going to work...cause for all i know the projector could be ancient.... oh well. i told them it would most probably work.... and the PC guy just kept talking about XP.... lol.....
My friend is sold on the iPod though and will probably be getting the miniPod if and when it comes out.

Even if it was an old projector it'd at least have a standard 'video in' job (little yellow av plug) hehee.
Then it might have s-video, and probably vga.
If it's a really good one it might even have DVI.
I say this guy's a pathetic idiot for a 'bigtime computer guy', especially if he thought a projector would use a SERIAL port.

This person you describe sounds like an idiot in general. The fact that he's a PC junkie and anti mac only adds to his glowing personality.
Sounds like most "PC junkies I've met". Most are fairly proficient in their area of expertise yet dumb enough to make a confident statement about something they know very little about.

Well he maybe confuses a Serial port with an S-video port or something like that, since they can look alike. But he doesn't sound too knowledgeable nonetheless.

That would be like me saying I tried plugging my FW-DVD-R Drive to my USB hub but it wont work. A common mistake because USB and Firewire are so similar.
Hey, lets not pull punches on this one. This person was obviously intent on making Hawkeye_a feel like a LOSER for 30 minutes based on the fact that he uses a Mac.
Don't forget to update us on what happened that night. You can always adjust the default settings for the visuals in iTunes.

True, but only the Mac serial port looks like an S-Video port. The serial ports a PC uses are rectangle shaped.

Unless the projector is a decade old it will have a RGB 15pin "D-Sub" connector - otherwise known as a common VGA monitor input. Most all projectors will support NTSC, PAL, and SECAM signals via RCA composite input (analog video 'RCA jack') or S-Video.
In other words, there probably isn't a post-1995 laptop or desktop computer that WON'T work with the projector.

Well the party went on fine....the projector was great, although the visualizations did have an unexpeted effect..... the ppl were mesmorized by them to the extent that they were not dancing lol.But everyone loved em.

S-video has two less pins than the RS-422 round shell serial.
You can actually use a mac keyboard cable as an S-video cable.
The round shell serial is RS-422, and is mildly faster than the trapezoidal RS-232 which all PCs had.
PCs never had the RS-422 as a common port.

Yup, there were two kinds of serial ports on PCs. Most modern computers still have the shorter rectangular serial port, while older ones also had the longer rectangular port.

Does it crack anyone else up to see those big, ugly, serial and parallel ports on new, top of the line, PC portables? Like most printers and modems aren't available with USB ports? Bleh! It's just so damned retro.

Either way they do it, somebody is going to complain. People went wild when Apple tossed the legacy ports, but I think it was time. You're right, modern PCs are pretty ridiculous. The only use for floppies I have is booting computers that don't want to boot from CD.
