Why are Honda's so UGLY?

I wouldn't say that Hondas are ugly... they are rather conservative, and plain, however.

That said, I got over 100k miles with no problems whatsoever in my Civic. I wish some of the cooler-looking cars were built as well.

Traded a 1993 CBR 900 RR (Red/Black/Silver) on a 2000 CBR 929 RR (Red/White). Wonderful bike.

Tho I'm looking at the 2004 1000 RR's a little bit, but inclined to wait for the KTM RC8 that's gonna hit in 2005 (hopefully).

I'm actually a big fan of Honda's as far as Bikes, Dirt Bikes, ATV's, SNow Blowers... pretty much everything they make, I like. I was so close to buying a 250EX Quad, I just couldn't afford it. But the title is referring very specifically to THIER CARS.

My 2000 Honda Accord is plain but a great car. I passed on a Ford Taurus when I bought it (not to start a Ford vs. Honda fight, but I hated the look of the Taurus). I also don't like the newer Honda Accords (blech tail lights).

The Accord just looked (and still looks) great to me as I'm not that flashy a driver (what's with those light-up windshield wiper fluid shooters?). But let's put it in perspective: I was upgrading from a 1994 Ford Escort wagon (my out-of-college knockaround car...my friends laughed when I bought it but then needed me to haul stuff for 'em).

I'll tell you. On a real sports cars, that have a nitrous kit installed, you have to flush the air out of the system before you use it, so that when you hit the button you actually pump NO2 into the engine and not just more air. So in these real sports cars, when you flush the system, it spits out two clouds of mist as it flushes. Someone had the idea of putting blue LEDs by the nozzles, so when they flush, you'll get neat blue clouds. Then everyone and their mother with their shitbox 91 honda and 88 chevy with their rusty exhaust and oil leaks, decide that their car will look "cool" with these ugly lights too. I laugh whenever I see a little 89 Civic with 4 different colored body panels driving around with the lights on their hood. Like there is a chance in HELL a shitbox like that has NITROUS!

Wow...they have an actual purpose on a car that has the nitrous kits. I've been calling 'em "light up car nipples." Sounds like the same people who put a $2000 sound system into a $100 car (like my brother does).

Back to driving my boring, basic black Accord.

P.S. When I had my Escort I wanted a Bad Boy decal on the back window as a sort of a joke...

P.P.S. My local Honda dealer folks refer to the Element as the "ice cream truck."

Let's be clear- Honda has been ahead of it's time both technologically in terms of engine management (CCVC and VTEC, anyone?) and in terms of style when compared with contemporary years.

86 CRX Si. What else looked so good in 1986 in that price range? Nothing else. 84-87 was a set of years where everything American looked boxy, everything BMW and Mercedes had was nice, but predictable in appearance, and everything Japanese wasn't much to look at either, be it a 300ZX or an RX-7. Sure, this car has a nice rake to the rear door, but it was far more affordable than the Z or the RX-7 and fun to drive if you pushed the needle on the tach.

Del Sol? Not bad, although it started to get competition from Tiburon and other pocket rockets.

S2000 continues that trend, and even has RWD, a real pleasure to drive.

Sure, you may not like the Civic. It isn't meant to excite, it's mean to be a college kid car.

The Accord is an upscale Honda, before you cross over into Acura-land. Occasionally, a stylish Accord gets made, like the one with these taillights:

But seriously, I had no idea KTM is working on a sport bike. I remember the first motocrosser KTMs a few years back though.

My first dirt bike was an '82 Honda 50. What a bike. It had been heavily abused before I got it, but it just wouldn't die. Tough as nails, as far as a minibike goes. Next was an XR80. I still wish I had that bike. Sold the XR and my YZ80 for my streekbike. Somedays I wonder if I should've kept the dirtbikes...

Well.. their engines are cleaner and better mileages than those Americans made.

Who needs torque when your vehicle weighs 1000 pounds. I'll admit they make some great motors, nothing to win races with, or pull some heavy loads with (I love my full-o-torque 4.3L V6) but all the power in the world won't make an ugly car pretty,

Cleaner? It all depends on how you take care of them.

Different design goals. CVCC was meant to clean burn and run decent in a very small car conceived during the oil crisis and emissions restrictions of the 70s.

VTEC was meant to make the most of a small engine and get more efficient burning and make more HP (not torque) in the process.

Had Honda wanted to make a torquey engine, it would be fairly easy for them to do so- that just wasn't on the high priority list for the cars that shipped with those engines.

What's with the big handle on the back trunk lid? Is that for when the matchbox version comes out it is easier to pick up?

Seriously, do the rear wheels really lose that much traction to warrant such a huge spoiler?

Actually VTEC was designed for fuel economy, not HP.

And that may be so, but point still stands. Get enough people in say, a Civic, even with VTEC and it will bog down.

Even the Neon when it came out in 95 had better stats.

A lot of 6 cyl at the time was putting out those specs.

Even Chevy is dumping the Cavalier and going with a faster option with a super charger. Honda doesn't seem to be showing any interest in higher numbers.

As far as consistantly ugly across the board, Pontiac gets my vote hands down.

Looks like Chris Bangle is determined to bring the same fate upon BMW. Gawd the new 5-series is hideous.
