If there's one thing that needs updating, it's family law. The wife cheats, then gets the house and most of the money? That's ridiculous.

Maybe just a slut? tramp?
Whore will do.
BTW LBK I didn't know "whore" was a four letter word.

I'm sorry, but how do you know the shoe fits? You only have one side of the story. Perhaps he was cheating as well? Perhaps he was wasting so much time and money on lottery tickets that he was no longer paying attention to her anymore? Perhaps he was abusive, either physically or mentally? Furthermore, even if he was a model husband, her having an affair does not necessarily make her a "whore"; "whore" or "slut" implies that she was having multiple affairs simultaneously.
Finally, "whore" isn't the sort of word I expect to come out of the mouth of someone who claims to have the religious convictions you claim to have. It even isn't a word I would ever choose to label someone with, and I don't claim to have half the moral convictions you would (by virtue of the religious beliefs you claim to subscribe to)

p.s. Maybe he would have never bought the winning ticket if not for her ways. You know, cause and effect.... or not. Whatever.

Yeah, keep going with that one.

If I was calling her a whore and telling her she was going to hell, you might have a point above.
There is no justifiable reason to be cheating on your husband.
If she wants to have sex with someone else, she should break all ties with him. Not doing so, IMHO makes her a whore.
whore __ _P___Pronunciation Key__(hr, hr)
n.
A prostitute.
A person considered sexually promiscuous.
A person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain.

But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."
John 8:1-11 (NIV)
Moral: when asked the question "What would Jesus do?", the answer is often the opposite of what Zimphire would do.

No, I didn't stone the woman to death. Nor would I. I am not saying I am any better than she is. I'm a sinner too.
What Jesus said was, pretty much only one man has the right to judge someone's life. Unless that person is perfect.
I am not judging the woman in this way. Jesus wasn't coming against them calling her an adulterer. He was coming against them for trying to STONE her for it. That was the old law. He was there to replace it. That is why he said "Those who are sinless, cast the first stone"
Jesus also would tell them to "go and sin no more" telling them they indeed are sinners AKA adulterer AKA whore
The people here would probably try to tell Jesus "who was he to tell her she was sinning" Pffft.. and then call him a child molester.
But anyhow, what you are basically telling me is, It wasn't alright for me to "Judge" her and call her a whore, but it's perfectly ok for you to point your fingers at me a judge me for calling her that.
I am sure none of you realized how hypocritical that was before you hit the reply button.
Sorry it didn't work the way you thought it was going to.

A bad marriage is no reason for cheating. Explaining away the woman's poor actions don't make them any better. She was screwing around, perhaps calling her a whore (though I think she probably does deserve it) isn't the best thing. But I'm happy she didn't get anything.

What that story is meant to teach is that you are not supposed to be judgmental of people. Jumping up and down and yelling "Ha ha, what a whore!" is definitely being judgmental, no? The fact that you use a less extreme form of judgmental behavior than stoning people doesn't change the fact that you're not following Jesus' message here. I don't see Jesus insulting the woman and calling her a whore in that story.
And calling me judgmental for pointing out that you're being judgmental doesn't have much more value than an "I know you are but what am I" sort of argument.

So would have it been any different if I just called her a sinner? Jesus did.

Sure it does. You just talked down to me for doing the exact same thing you claimed I did.
You indeed judged me for my actions.
It's funny how we can see when other people has splinters in their eyes, but can't see the log in our own isn't it.
But that is ok, we are human. We are fallible. We will never be perfect. Nor should anyone expect that.

I think I understand what you're saying, but in general usage, 'whore' isn't a gender-neutral term. I suppose that's why people are getting riled by the usage.
It's easy for me to say (with a distance of several thousand miles from the news story) but, like some of the posters have already said, we don't know the full story. And calling some a 'whore' is a pretty significant value judgement on someone that none of us know...
That's without even getting into the whole gender politics of the word itself...
Anyway. It's late. I'm tired...

In general usage, whore is ANYBODY who cheats. People just use it more often on women, because for some reason it's considered 'okay' if a guy cheats on his sig other. WTF?! I don't know why. It's stupid. One who cheats= WHORE.

Whore
(Whore) n. [OE. hore, AS. hore; akin to D. hoer, hoere, G. hure, OHG. huora, huorra, Icel. hora, Dan. hore, Sw. hora, Goth. hors an adulterer, AS. hor adultery, OHG. huor, and probably to L. carus dear. Cf. Charity.] A woman who practices unlawful sexual commerce with men, especially one who prostitutes her body for hire; a prostitute; a harlot. Wyclif.
Syn. Harlot; courtesan; prostitute; strumpet.
Websters Revised Unabridged Dictionary 1913
Common use is as prostitute, but the words has roots from adultery....sounds like the woman in this case was indeed a whore.

Yes, he seems to have overlooked these particular words: "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared.
LOL - I haven't been to church in 40 years and I get it. I don't really care if he calls her a whore, it just illustrates that the Bible, like any other text, is what people make of it.

Perhaps it does. However, I would never call someone a "whore" under the context (and lack thereof) that you are.

"Condemn" meaning to death. (What he stopped from happening. One of the main reasons I am not for the DP)
He however did call her a sinner, and told her to sin no more.
Again, would it have been ok if the topic would have said
"I bet the sinner is kicking herself?"
Of course not!
Because my fanclub would have found something wrong that that too. They always do.
It's called an obsession.
That is why they are apart of my fanclub.
I really don't think they can help it.
Now me calling her a whore was probably not the best thing to do. But them pointing their condemning fingers at me for doing such a thing, was just as bad as me calling her a whore.
I don't think some people in here thought about their own splinter in their eye before they hit the submit button.
It was all about "attacking Zimphire" Lots of babble, little brain involved.
And it backfired on them badly.
So in short, is this gal a whore? More than likely. Should I have called her that? More than likely not.
Should have people condemned me for condemning, esp when they aren't sinless themselves? If they want. But they look awfully silly being hypocrites when they do it.
