Then try with possibly adding the second bit on.... I MIGHT still have a few of the 6 bit adaptors around here. But you aren't going to hurt anything if you get it wrong. You might get crazy sync though...

The important part is to power down and then make the change then power up and see if anything changes.

You'll know you have a good setup when you get a boot image AND in the monitors panel you can select at least 1024x768 in thousands or millions of colors.

Hi all, my first time here.Someone recently gave me a 9600/233 Power Mac that has a 21" Sony Trinitron G500 monitor.

The monitor is connected to the 15 pin out of the computer via an adaptor that has

6 dip switches on it. I think someone has messed with the dip switches as the monitor says

"no signal" . Any one know where I can look to fix this?

There are many different adaptors out there, and nearly every one has its own completely different way of setting the dip switches.

Just start with all of them in the 'off' position, start up the system, power off if no signal; turn switch 1 on, start up, power off if no signal; turn switch 2 on... Follow a binary progression, eventually you'll find a good setting.

Yes, it's a nightmare. I spent a couple hours mapping out all the settings one of my adaptors has. What you really want is a switch-less 'multisync' adaptor.

Each adapter has its own settings for the switches, you need to either see if there are settings on the adapter itself (look on both sides), or figure out who made it and google. Mae sure that monitor does not have multiple input settings and you are connected to the wrong input by mistake.

Generally Sony trinitron monitors do all mac video modes, and quite a few came with Mac adapters in the packaging. So if by chance that adapter is the original for the monitor you might find the settings in the owners manual which you can download in PDF form on Sonys website.

Does the 9600 bong when you turn it on (if not there might not be a video problem at all)?

A photo of the adapter might help. I have switch settings for a few of them.

Be sure to note the current positions. If you accidentally disturbed a few of the switches, but not all of them, the current positions will help you determine which to try. You could first assume you only disturbed one; that narrows it down to 6 or 8 total tests.

When testing, you don't need to power down the Mac (avoids hard drive wear from constant spinning up then down). Just adjust the settings and press command-apple-power on the keyboard to restart.

I too have a few of these adaptors and documentation, and might recognize the model if you post a picture or at least describe its basic features and construction.

Yep, there's only 64 possible combinations Sure beats when I forgot the combination to the decimal, four dial combination lock on the hardcase my favourite synth was locked inside.
