New displays
This is a home decor thread, not a new displays tech thread.
I didn't see one already, so...

If you give a **** about what your monitor looks like on the outside then you are an idiot. Buy a shitty monitor that goes with your decor and quit complaining.
All this brushed-metal bashing has really gotten old.
I think they look alright, not sure about the center stand though.

love brushed metal
I like the new look better than the old displays, personally.

Yes and like your opinion, a good lot of them are wrong.
That said, the Brushed metal look is FINE, it looks good, and it matches the PowerBooks AND Power Macs. And Xserve. Therefore... SHUT UP!
You don't like it, go buy a lovely nice NEC, Samsung, Viewsonic, whatever just don't bother posting about how much you hate it. And by the way... if you have a G5 you already have a silver THING in your house anyway.

Come back and comment when you actually have a house to moan about the decor in.
FYI, the G5 is out of sight in the rack.
Silver stuff is so... ...1999.

Having said that, I really like the look of the new monitors - they're sleek and sophisticated. And I also like the texture of the AlBooks so I'm sure the colour isn't going to be a problem.

The brushed metal look will compliment each other.

Hey uhh I'll throw myself in with that US, and you'd best not call me a newbie since I've been here a year longer than you, and have nearly twice the post count. That said, I knew who Turtle777 was, I recognize the SN.
Never call anyone a newbie, there are always people who have been on a forum longer, and have better taste than you do.
As for having a house to worry about decor. Do you not think that I look after the decor of the two places I live at? Granted you can't do MUCH with a dorm room, but you can do some. And simply because YOU happen to not like silver stuff doesn't mean everyone else doesn't. I have a 12 inch PowerBook that goes great with my desk lamp and floor lamp in my room, it also matches my speakers, I will be spray painting a shelve the same silver colour, and am going to go with some other elements that should comment the whole look fairly well also. Don't assume everyone is as creatively devoid as you are.
Simply because you don't like the look of something, doesn't mean you have more taste than everyone else in the world (actually if your personality matches your taste well I'd say you'd have poor taste.)

So... Let's get this straight... If someone has been on a forum longer, they have better taste? If someone likes the brushed metal look, they have taste? If someone hates the brushed metal look, they don't have taste?
Right...

This is the point. If we want to buy Apple stuff (save the iPod mini), we're forced to go with whatever colour gets signed off by the powers that be. Why is that? Would it be too much of a stretch for Apple to come out with more than one colour or more than one design? Not everyone dislikes silver. Not everyone likes silver.

Eww yuk. That's gonna look like a plank of wood with some silver spray paint on it. Real classy like.

Hmmm... So... If I like the only colour Apple do, I'm creatively sound. If I hate the only colour Apple do I'm creatively devoid?
Apple's lastest silver kick just really doesn't go with white portuguese marble and gold. Really, it doesn't.

I've got great taste thanks. And a fantastic personality. And I don't hit my sister.
You'll notice that I haven't said anything about anyone else being devoid of taste because they like silver - I simply stated that I hate it. Yet you, Chick, with the fantastic personality, somehow think I've said that I've "got the best taste in the World". Learn to read.
I'm wondering how many of you who jumped on my own personal preference statement with the "if you don't like silver you're completely devoid of taste" are owned by Apple's corporate design machine. And how many of you think black leather is OK in a Ferrari.
While I don't dislike apple's new monitors, I'm underwhelmed by them.
Why?
Because for the first time ever, apple copied everyone else.
That's right. That display looks generic. Sure it has a snazzy little 'foot', but it's still common. 99% of LCD displays sold today have that same basic look, with the L shaped foot and the flat screen... heck I think sony even made monitors with the controls on the side like that.
Thus I'm not impressed. It's like ferrari or lamborghini designing a new car that looks similar to a honda civic. This just isn't apple. The damn monitors look like enlarged 172Xs.
Yes I'm impressed with the 30" screen, but really now... for a company that takes pride in it's design this is shameful. Heck they even copied the whole silver thing.. I'm surprised the leg isn't black plastic or something.
When I first saw the G4 powermacs 3 years ago the first thing that came to MY mind was that (while the machines were uber powerful) they looked NOTHING like any computer I'd ever seen. That's still rather true.
Heck the G5 even follows this, though I think if it was painted black it would look fine with an IBM logo slammed on the side of it. I can think of at least a dozen better ways to make a display besides setting it on an L arm -- BESIDES that doesn't sound very solid to begin with!
Maybe I don't have good taste here, and granted it wouldn't stop me from buying an all new setup, it just aint right. I don't see how 'good taste' constitutes being like everyone else nor do I see how the new display design is revolutionary or beautiful. To me Apple should have just rebranded some large displays and called it a day because it would have been just as effective.

I like the old designs better myself. If only they'd taken that design and added firewire and usb 2.0 ports.
I haven't seen them up close, but after looking at quite a few pics of them (on Apple's site and from WWDC), I really like them. I like the much more than the plastic pinstripe ones. The dual Firewire and USB2 is a nice touch. I love the simplicity of the displays, and the neat aluminum leg to boot. Simple, clean, and sleek. They are FL approved. And the 16ms pixel response time makes FL happy. That was sorely needed, IMO.

If you don't like paying through the nose for nicely designed yet mediocre hardware then don't. I sure as hell don't.
