So you might be right.

I'm going to move to Tiger much quicker than I moved to Panther if it supports display rotation natively.

Hopefully this will not just be for Cinema Displays. The Dell 20" Widescreens can rotate too, among others.

So now a couple of questions:

1) Will this be compatible with *most* (core image supported perhaps) cards, or just a top few?

2) Is this a feature that needs hardware support as well as the software support in Tiger?

...now if my old ACD 20" didn't look so funky with it's legs sticking out when rotated...

I would suspect that this feature will not be tied to a particular display. In display preferences for 10.3 the title bar says the name of screen it is running, so the fact that this preview says Cinema HD Display doesn't mean that's all it will work on.

Also, I don't understand why screen rotation is a hardware feature, when I run MacMame, I can change the orientation of the screen image. I always thought of display rotation as a software feature.

I too am of the crowd that believes this is a long since overdue feature. I mean if the hardware can support this, why not just implement it. My display isn't widescreen, but it would be nice to have 1200 x 1600 for reading long documents.

ATI's newest drivers for their X800 and 9800 Mac cards have a hardware acclerated rotating option called VERSAVISION™, you can use now in 10.3 if you like.

My 20" Cinema display doesn't rotate (I know, I just looked at it) so how is 10.4 going to magically make it swivel 90 degrees? Am I missing something I should have read in the manual I should have read?

Won't this mess-up sub-pixel rendering? -> because the bars of red, green, and blue are stacked differently.

Since subpixel rendering is also a software feature, they hopefully will include an interface for changing the orientation.On Win XP, you can download a utility from MS that allows you to do this (I use it for my Tablet since I need to change the orientation frequently). Of course Apple could once again do them one better by automatically changing the subpixel rendering algorithm to meet the screen orientation, rather than leaving it as a manual process.

Any, display, eh? I can just imagine the looks I'll get in the coffeeshops with a folding bluetooth keyboard and my powerbook propped up on its side..

Ok, I've got 10.4, a PMG4 DP, a Radeon 9000 and a Dell 20" 2005FPW that rotates. I don't see this as an option in the Displays pref. Anyone out there see differently?

10.4 - Powerbook 15 inch 1.25ghz - External CRT attached - Rotation option in Display System Preference

works on my Powerbook G4 15" 1.33ghz - NO display attached.

Note that you have to quit system prefs and reload it after changing rotation, otherwise pressing Ctrl Alt Apple whilst clicking monitors does nothing.

On my G5, with a Radeon 9600 the option is there (no key press required). with the Geforce 5200 the option is gone.

Hmmm... doesn't work for me either. I guess I'll stick with the ATI Displays panel that lets me rotate.

Really odd, though...

well very interesting. just to make things clear: you only get the rotation with 10.4? NOT 10.3.x? and it may be for all cards with 10.4? ( ie someonw got it with NO 2d monitor connected?)

in 10.3.6 nothing happens with ctrl+alt+apple, monitors does not open nor does sys prefs.

this is the ref I saw that made me start the thread. I guess its 10.4 +/- certain video cards.

I've got 10.4 running on a G4 iBook 800 and just did the ctrl+alt+apple modifier when opening Display system prefs and it gave me the rotation option. I rotated my display through 90° which was an interesting experience, because I just could not get my head round how to co-ordinate what I was seeing with trackpad movements.

But then the panic set in. I clicked the show all button and held the modifiers and reselected the Displays button and there was no rotation option!.

Found that I had to quit System Prefs then open it again to get the rotate option back again. Thought I was going to be stuck holding my iBook at a weird angle for a moment there!
