Okay, I have reserves about buying OS X... From what I can tell, I don't think I will like it as much as I do OS 9.
I wanna know what everyone else thinks...
Will you:

A) get OS X PB asap
B) get OS X PB after its been out a while
C) wait for OS X 1.0, but get is straight away
D) wait a while for all the bugs to be worked out of OS X 1.0
E) hold on to OS 9 as long as is productively possible

I'd have to put myself down for 'E'... Now if a lot of Mac users feel that way, its not going to bode well for Apple...
I will prob end up getting PB, but only for the sake of having it...
So, what are you gonna do?

Gotta say "A," even though I have DP4 now
I will have to go with option "A" as well. Although I may opt for "B" only waiting for a week or two to see what kind of bugs PB has.
"A". Those were good in school too.

Since I already got the 2nd HD, and the bigger monitor for OS X Beta, it would look very silly to back out now. That would make it look much like a mistake. Or like an excuse to buy the new hardware anyway.
A & C. (if it's ok to choose 2 )

I don't even have OS 9 right now.

I'm still using 8.6!!

It's kinda nice though, I still haven't been convinced to switch to 9, but Aqua? woohooo!!
'E' because i think it would be better to wait for the creases to be iorned out. Theres a hell of a lot of software for OS9, and although OS9 apps will work on OSX, i think it will be terribly slow. but if the speed and compatibality issues arent a problem, id upgrade preety soon. or i might just do a partition, and keep em both.
But as long as OS9 is productive, id stick to it.
I am still using 8.6 on a G3 - and have had no problems. I dont have much time to try to work with bugs in the system. So, I would probably say choice D in the list above.

NisusWriter 5.1.3, PageMaker 6.52, MS Word 98, iCab 2.1, Netscape 4.73, FileMakerPro 4.1, Eudora Pro 4.3.2, Papyrus 8.10, AppleWorks 5.0.3, uPresent 2.2.2, Tex-Edit Plus 4.0, Consultant 2.58, Claris Impact 1.0
Probably option D or E for me. I doubt I'll be one of the early adopters of the new OS - but then again, if the feedback in these fora is positive enough, perhaps I might. The thing is, I've spent years getting to know the current OS throughout all of its iterations, and I finally have my machine customized to the point where any change will be a change for the worse. For instance, I use a combination of Task-Menu-Bar, Alias-Menu, and Drop-Drawers to provide nearly instant and easy access to all of my various applications and documents. The organization on my hard-drive is a thing of beauty (at least to me it is; no doubt it would just confuse someone else who wasn't intimately familiar with its byzantine structure) and the OS X dock is simply not going to be an adequate replacement for what I'm now using. Moreover, I've spent hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on a whole host of programs that either won't work under X, or will work only under OS 9 emulation. For instance, I have Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro, and NUM 5. These are all recent (within one year) purchases. I'm not prepared to just trash them, and I doubt that these companies will provide free upgrades to the Carbon versions - if they ever come out.

Don't get me wrong, I think that there are a lot of good things to the new OS, and I have no intention of being an OS-Luddite - eventually I'll make the move - but I'm in no hurry to give up the current OS. I'll do so only when the disadvantes of sticking with an unsupported OS begin to outweigh the advantages of using a familiar and comfortable OS, and not a second sooner.

A!
Everyone seem's to be forgetting this thing has protected memory so it can't freeze your whole computer, which I think is a pretty big bonus for a beta program (I have read a post where a user of DP4 had a crash in the finder, he simply restarted the finder and carried on!!.
As for the speed of the emulation environment, some people say it's faster and others say it's up to half the speed of the current Mac OS, so who knows (I'm sure it will vary depending on the program).
OS X is the future, it's as simple as that.
My understanding is if the OS crashes the computer goes down with it. Applications cannot bring down everything like they can now, but system problems will still be present. Windows NT/2000 is supposed to do the same things as OS X (fully protected memory, preemptive multithreading, blah blah blah) and I've seen it crash before. But mostly because the person using it loves getting beta drivers for all his hardware. Faster but not stabler. Anyways, my understanding is that crashes will still happen, just not nearly as often or for the same reasons as before. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Blizzard.
I use 8.6 as well. I just dont like how "girly" and "Happy gay yippeee" OS9 looks with its cutesy little graphics and stuff.

Which brings me to my main concern about OSX.

Is it going to have some sort of theme that keeps it looking like 8.6, without all the cartoony animation Windows 98 CRAP!?! Seriously, I've seen screenshots of it, and although it might be "Beautiful" to an art major, it looks like the ugliest OS I've ever seen.

I'm not sure if OS X will have themes built in to it, does anyone know yet?

I do know that kaliedoscope as well as a whole range of GUI groups are working on having software ready for Aqua's release.

I would love to have OS X with a 22" Apple Cinema Display.

Ive basically already said what you said Blizzard but without contradicting myself -
"My understanding is if the OS crashes the computer goes down with it. Applications cannot bring down everything" -it's what you posted Blizzard

P.S sorry if I got you confused for blizzane or whom ever in the past, I am a slightly dyslexic (free iMac on the way though thanx to my education authority, Yes!)
& greatly stupid.
(I knew we had something in common!)
I'm only joking (i.e these reamrks are made in jest) OK!!
I contradicted myself? Sorry, I don't see how...you know how we dumb people need things like this pointed out to one another =).

N.P about the mistaken identities.
A--the sooner the better
I'll probably go with A & C. I'll get it b/c I want to play with it but I don't think I'll install it on my main machine until all the kinks are worked out. I have a lot of expensive software (Photoshop, Quark, GoLive, Office) that would be great to have for X (when it's all finally carbonized), but I really don't want to spend all of that money right now.

Dev

I'm voting A...but cautiously.
It'll get installed on a separate partition on the external HD. That way it can't hurt anything if it decides to go nuclear.
A for my home machine (dual booting with 9 just in case) and E at work (where 8.6 is still just fine).

a few more bricks an'
we'll be done Guvnor
I'm getting OS X PB as soon as I can at home, testing carefully before installing it at work.

Honest to God, Quartz is a gift from the heavens!

Blizzard as I have pointed out before I am dyslexic, I have been pulled up about really tiny spelling errors since I made this public in these forum's & I know everyone's not gonna read my posts (it' wouldn't be a nice feeling to know that I've sent the whole of the USA into coma) but the mistakes I make are trivial, so I think maybe people could be a little more tolerant especially as I do not have a spellchecker on my system (no Office or word or netscape).
Look I don't want this to get out of hand or too personal, but I'm sorry to disappoint you; I am not dumb (far from it mate) and as far as I can tell anyone who makes that comment about someone they do not really know, might unfortunately be a little simple minded themselves.

Look, I don't want, or mean to offend anyone (regardless of sexual persuasion! )
so do you accept my apologies if I have offended you, & call a truce?
I've just re-read the post you made in this thread (as well as mine) & I think I might of overeacted slightly, sorry I seem to be getting into the habit of doing this lately, my apologies.
A - So I can try it out on our current iMac. After that, I'm going to wait to buy a new Mac, so it will come with an OS X CD.

A.

But the advice I will give to anyone who asks it is to be more cautious.

I'm a college student who spends countless hours tinkering with my mac anyway (so learning curves and early bugs aren't too much of a problem). I also happen to have my harddrive partitioned. This is quite unusual for an imac user, but it makes beta testing more feasible than it is for most people who don't have the harddrive space or partition set up. So I'd say, yeah, you bet I'm getting the public beta -- but I wouldn't if I were making decisions for a school, business, or if I didn't have the ability to rearrange my work schedule at the drop of a hat.
A.
OS X for me ASAP
Another 'A' here, I too have DP4.
Anyone want a copy? $10

Just Kidding!

I see dead people.
A&E - not just a channel anymore!

Seriously, though, I will have OS X PB on the machine currently running OS X DP4 as soon as the shrinkwrap comes off. But my work machines will wait for 1.0, or later as I judge from experience with PB (and what flavor jam?
A! (Classic.app is god)
A. You can dual boot with OS9 so whats the problem?
