About

The Exile Character Editor v1.1 is a companion utility for Spiderweb Software's shareware fantasy RPG Exile: Escape From the Pit, written by series creator Jeff Vogel and posted to Info-Mac in April 1995. It edits a saved Exile party so you can rewrite gold, food, skills, and quest state without grinding for them in-game.

What it edits

The demo build can give a party unlimited gold and food, fully heal everyone, take the party out of a town, and "unkill" dragons that have already been slain. The registered build extends this to deeper edits across the party file.

Registered features

The paid version can resurrect named NPCs (the manual's running joke is killing Motrax for his hoard, then reviving him long enough to extract the secret you needed), complete quests, reveal full dungeon maps, and grant the special items the engine normally hands out as quest rewards.

Author and pedigree

Jeff Vogel (jvogel@eden.rutgers.edu at the time) is the founder of Spiderweb Software and the designer of the entire Exile trilogy and its successor Avernum series. Shipping his own save editor as shareware is unusual - most editors of this era were third-party.

Distribution

Available as game/com/exile-editor-11.hqx on Info-Mac, packaged as a BinHex 4.0 archive. Requires a working Exile install to be useful.
