Astrostein is a custom scenario for Wolfenstein 3D by Laz Rojas, the Mac mod-maker best known for the WolfenDOOM series. It reskins the Wolfenstein engine with new sounds and graphics to deliver a fresh set of corridors, enemies, and secrets built on top of the original 3rd Encounter or full commercial release.
What it is
Astrostein is the first entry in a three-part run of scenarios (Astrostein, Astrostein 2, Astrostein 3) that Rojas distributed for the Macintosh version of Wolfenstein 3D, swapping the WWII trappings for a different setting while keeping the core shooter loop intact.
Engine and requirements
The scenario runs inside Wolfenstein 3D itself, so you need a working copy of either Wolfenstein 3D Third Encounter or the full commercial Mac release to play it. Astrostein supplies the level, art, and sound data that the host engine loads.
Author and legacy
Laz Rojas became one of the most prolific scenario designers in the Mac Wolfenstein scene, and the Astrostein trilogy sits alongside his later WolfenDOOM work as part of a large body of fan-made content for id Software's classic shooters.
Distribution
The Astrostein scenarios circulated freely through Info-Mac and the Macintosh Garden, where they remain archived as part of Laz Rojas' collected Wolfenstein 3D scenarios.
