About

Warcraft Demo is the playable Macintosh sampler (v1.07) of Warcraft: Orcs & Humans, Blizzard Entertainment's 1994 real-time strategy game. It bundles three campaign missions playable as either Orc or Human and supports two-player skirmishes over modem or AppleTalk network, drawn from the full retail release.

What is included

The demo offers three single-player levels from each campaign side, the full RTS interface, and head-to-head play via modem or local network. Blizzard ships it as a complete, time-unlimited preview rather than a save-disabled trial. The 1.07 build also fixes problems present in earlier demo drops.

Gameplay

Warcraft is a base-and-army real-time strategy game: harvest gold from mines and wood from forests, build a town hall, barracks, and unit-producing structures, then field footmen, archers, clerics, grunts, spearmen, and necromancers. Faction-specific spellcasters and asymmetric unit kits give Orcs and Humans distinct flavors despite parallel tech trees.

Setting

The full game's narrative spans the First War in Azeroth, where invading Orcs from another dimension clash with Human defenders. The demo levels drop players into early scenarios from each side, introducing the iconic peons and peasants, footmen-versus-grunts melee, and the clerics-versus-necromancers magic split that defined the early Warcraft tone.

System requirements

Per Blizzard's distribution notes, the demo requires a 68030 or higher Mac, System 7.1 or later, 4.5 MB of free memory, and 256 colors at 640x480. A Power Macintosh runs it considerably faster but is not required.

Historical context

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans launched on MS-DOS in November 1994, with the Macintosh port arriving in early 1996. The game was inspired by Westwood's Dune II, was originally pitched as a Warhammer adaptation, and went on to sell roughly 300,000 copies, founding the franchise that produced Warcraft II, III, and World of Warcraft.
