Who's Out Here is a small companion utility for the Outland online gaming service, the Mac-era subscription network that hosted multiplayer card and board games. Rather than launching a full client, it lets a member peek at who is currently logged in to Outland before deciding to sign on.
Purpose
Outland's main attraction was its lobby of human opponents, so knowing whether your usual partners or rivals were online mattered before committing to a session. Who's Out Here answered that single question quickly and without the overhead of the full game client.
Companion to Outland
The utility was built around the Outland service itself and assumes a working Outland account; it is a sidecar for that ecosystem rather than a standalone game.
Lightweight footprint
As a focused helper application it stays small and unobtrusive, intended to sit alongside the main Outland software in a Mac user's Apps or Games folder.
Historical context
Outland was one of several late-1990s commercial gaming services aimed at Mac users; surviving utilities like this one are useful artefacts for understanding how members interacted with the lobby outside of active play.
