About

Heroes of the Black Tower v1.0.1 (sibling Info-Mac entry) is Luca Accomazzi's bug-fix re-upload of the same Sword Dream 3D scenario. The single change called out in the BinHex header is a fix for a missing-resource crash a player had reported; no new game elements were added in this patch.

Why two Info-Mac nodes

The original 1997 submission landed under the filename sd3d-black-tower.hqx; the v1.0.1 patch was re-uploaded shortly after under the slightly different filename sd-3d-black-tower.hqx (dashes added between letters and digits). Each filename produced its own catalogue entry, which is why the same scenario appears twice in this archive under sibling slugs.

The scenario

Black Tower is a fantasy plug-in for the Sword Dream 3D engine - new monsters, spells, items, traps, riddles, characters, music, and architecture, presented through the engine's first-person 3D viewport. The pitch remains "think-first, act-later": exploration and puzzle-solving over twitch combat, despite the Marathon/Doom/Descent-style rendering.

What v1.0.1 fixes

The author's note is brief: "It fixes a small bug, recently discovered by a player, where the game would stop and complain about a missing resource. No new game elements were added for this release." Anyone running the May 1997 v1.0 submission can drop in this build without losing save state.

Engine and provenance

Requires Sword Dream 3D version 2.1 (distributed separately by Comenius). Author Luca Accomazzi (akko@enter.it); freely redistributable on internet, CD-ROM, and BBS. Macintosh Garden's Sword Dream 3D page lists Black Tower as one of the included scenarios; the engine itself was open-sourced on GitHub in 2022.
