Maniac Patch is a small modification for the Classic Mac arcade game Maniac version 2.1, distributed via the Info-Mac Archive. Rather than altering gameplay, the patch swaps out the original sound effects, giving long-time players a fresh audio experience without disturbing the underlying game executable.
What it does
The patch targets Maniac 2.1 specifically and rewrites the sound resources used by the game. Once applied, every in-game cue, from incidental blips to action stings, is replaced with an alternate set bundled by the author.
How to apply it
The archive ships as a single BinHex (.hqx) file. Decode it with Stuffit Expander or BinHex 4.0, then run the patcher against an unmodified copy of Maniac 2.1. Working from a backup is recommended, since the patch overwrites resources in place.
Author and origin
The patch was uploaded by uysjoh@slottsberg.educ.goteborg.se, an address tied to a Swedish school network active in the mid-1990s shareware community. It was posted to comp.sys.mac.* via the Info-Mac mirror.
Preservation notes
This entry is part of a Mac shareware preservation set. Because the patch only makes sense alongside the original Maniac game, it is best read as a curated companion artifact rather than a standalone title.
