About

This is the playable shareware demo of Nethergate, the 1998 historical-fantasy role-playing game designed by Jeff Vogel and published by Spiderweb Software for Classic Mac OS and Windows. Set during Boudica's revolt against Rome in AD 60-61, the demo offers an early slice of the dual-faction campaign that lets the player command either a Roman legionary squad or a band of Celtic warriors in the isolated valley of Shadowvale.

Setting and story

The full game opens in AD 60 under Emperor Nero, with the Brigantes-controlled valley of Shadowvale becoming a flashpoint between Rome and the native Celts. Players choose a side: Roman soldiers dispatched on a mysterious imperial mission, or Celtic warriors sent by their chief to the village of Nethergate. Both arcs converge on the hunt for three magical relics, the Fomorian's Stone Skull, the Eye of Cathrac, and the Crown of Annwn, leading to a final confrontation at the Spire of Ages.

Gameplay

Nethergate was Spiderweb's first game to use a 45-degree isometric viewpoint, layering pseudo-3D scenery over the conversation- and turn-based-combat structure familiar from Blades of Exile. Romans field stronger armor and weapons; Celts get superior magic, potion-craft, and wilderness skills. The unusual Spell Circle system replaces the traditional mage/priest split with six thematic schools, Health, War, Beast, Craft, Spirit, and Nether, with faction-restricted access to certain circles.

Engine and technical changes

The demo runs on Spiderweb's then-new isometric engine, a substantial upgrade from the orthogonal Exile/Blades of Exile codebase. The engine remained Mac-and-Windows native and shareware-friendly: small download, modest system requirements, and a save-game-portable upgrade path to the registered full version once the player paid Spiderweb's standard fee.

Development and release

Spiderweb Software, founded in 1994 by Jeff Vogel, released Nethergate in 1998 as the studio's first non-Exile title. The demo accompanied the full game across Spiderweb's usual distribution channels: direct download from spiderwebsoftware.com plus shareware CD compilations. In 2007 Vogel rebuilt the game from scratch as Nethergate: Resurrection on the Blades of Avernum engine, with a Mac release on May 21, 2007 and a Windows release on August 9, 2007.

Reception and legacy

Dragon magazine praised Nethergate as a fascinating romp through a mythic era while flagging its heavily MacGuffin-driven plot, and Computer Games Strategy Plus nominated it for Role-Playing Game of the Year in 1999. The dual-faction structure and historical setting remained unique in Spiderweb's catalog, and the 2007 Resurrection rewrite kept the original campaign in print for modern systems while adding two dungeons, extra quests, and updated graphics.
