Star Patrol is a classic space-themed strategy game built specifically to take advantage of Macintosh technologies. Designed by Donald E. Carlile and released as shareware in 1988, it emphasizes strategy over arcade reflexes, presenting a continuous-action challenge that rewards planning over twitch skill.
Strategy over arcade action
Where most space games of the era leaned on shooting and dodging, Star Patrol asks the player to think. Continuous action keeps pressure on, but progress comes from positioning, target priority, and resource decisions rather than reaction time alone.
Version 2.0 overhaul
Version 2.0 marked what the author called a quantum leap. The interface was unified across the game, color and sound were brought in throughout, and Apple's QuickTime supplied a music track. Important events are reported by spoken alerts to keep the player informed without breaking attention.
Help system everywhere
Star Patrol 2.0 ships with extensive help: Apple Guide walkthroughs, Balloon Help on screen elements, and traditional help screens. Newcomers can get oriented quickly without a printed manual at hand.
Power Macintosh native
Star Patrol 2.0 is a PowerPC-only release. Distribution went through info-mac and the Kagi shareware network, with registration handled at the author's Kagi page.
