ChaosCastle is a simple shoot-em-up by Nicolas Juillerat (University of Fribourg, Switzerland), distributed as Mac shareware via Info-Mac. The premise is direct: destroy everything in sight without getting killed yourself, while collecting falling coins and bonuses to unlock new zones full of scrolling levels and monsters.
Gameplay
Players blast through mineral, vegetal, and animal hazards as well as boss-style monsters. Falling coins and bonus pickups grant access to new zones, while hidden items unlock additional weapons and increase their power.
Features
Two-layer scrolling, color or dithered black-and-white display at many resolutions, save and load of games, 3D sound support, and an array of physical effects including magnetism, doppler shift, gravity, inertia, mirrors, fire, water, and self-directed weapons. The engine uses simple graphics to keep animation lively.
Version History
Improvements over version 0.9 include the new two-layer scrolling mode, better graphics, improved random level generation, added 3D-sound support, and many bug fixes.
Requirements
Any Macintosh with at least 1 MB of RAM; runs best on a Power Macintosh. Shareware, OS-friendly, and a sibling to the same author's ChaosGalaga.
