Despair is a darkly comic pestilence simulator from Lloyd Burchill in which players play the role of a wrathful deity, raining disasters down on a tiny black-and-white populace of helpless computer people. Released in 1997 for classic Mac OS, it pairs a stark monochrome aesthetic with a wicked sense of humor.
Gameplay
Players unleash an arsenal of calamities including diseased sheep, neutron bombs, volcanoes, fire, ice and lightning, then watch the simulated villagers panic, suffer and perish. The toolbox-of-cruelty design rewards experimentation and grim curiosity.
Presentation
Crisp 1-bit black-and-white artwork keeps the cartoon mayhem readable on any compact Mac display. Sound effects punctuate each disaster, although audio support is limited under Mac OS 9.
System and Compatibility
Despair is a 68k Macintosh title that runs from System 6 through Mac OS 9, and is well behaved under Mini vMac, Basilisk II and SheepShaver for modern preservation.
