Munchies is a 1996 Macintosh arcade game by Michael Fan in which you guide Melvin, a round red Pac-Man-style character with a serious appetite, around the play field gobbling food while dodging rogue cutlery and chasing skulls. Built on the Sprite Animation Toolkit, it pairs colorful graphics with a famously catchy soundtrack.
Gameplay
Clear every level by eating all the floating food, then sail through a bonus Dessert stage that appears every five levels.
Peas as projectiles
You are not defenseless: collected peas can be fired at hostile cutlery and stray food items, and salt and pepper power-ups make your shots more effective.
Presentation
The game is remembered for its bright visuals, upbeat audio, and the tagline that it offers addictive play "without calories or guilt."
Compatibility
Munchies runs on 68k and PowerPC Macs under System 7.0 through Mac OS 9, and works in Basilisk II; SheepShaver is reported as very unstable with the title.
