Developed by Fantasoft and released as Mac shareware in 1996, with a Windows port following in 1998, Monkey Shines is a single-screen platformer starring a chimpanzee named Bonzo. Players run, jump and climb across five themed worlds collecting red keys to unlock each world's exit, with a bundled level editor that produced a thriving library of fan worlds.
Setting and theme
Bonzo travels through five distinct themed worlds, the best-known being the haunted-house stage Spooked. Each world is composed of interconnected single-screen rooms filled with hazards, enemies and platforms, drawing on the visual language of late-80s Apogee and Amiga platformers rather than scrolling Sonic-era console design.
Gameplay
Each world requires the player to collect every red key before the exit door opens, with bonus blue keys leading to optional rooms and fruit pickups awarding points. The shareware build limits unregistered players to the first world for thirty days; registration unlocks all five worlds, and a built-in level editor lets players design and trade custom maps, of which more than 28 add-on worlds were documented.
Engine and technical changes
The game targets 68020 or higher Macs running System 7.1 with 5 MB free RAM, a 256-color 640x480 display and Sound Manager 3.1. Music is delivered as MOD-style tracker modules stored as MADH resources, allowing a multi-channel chiptune soundtrack within a small download. Notably, the title resists Basilisk II and SheepShaver emulation, prompting an open-source Java port released under GPLv3 by fan developer Erika Redmark.
Development and release
Fantasoft, founded by Dean Tersigni, distributed the game directly through 1990s Mac shareware sites and cover discs, with registration codes mailed to paying users. A CD-ROM sequel, Monkey Shines 2: Gorilla Warfare, expanded the formula with new worlds and additional content.
Reception and legacy
The title became a fixture of Mac shareware top-tens and is widely cited alongside Glider PRO and Pararena as a defining Mac platformer of the late System 7 / Mac OS 8 era. Its level editor and active fan community kept it in circulation for years after release, and the GPLv3 Java port keeps the worlds playable on modern systems.
