Hearts Deluxe is Freeverse's polished take on the classic trick-taking card game, bringing colorful animated opponents and crisp Mac-native presentation to the venerable Hearts ruleset. The base game shipped with three computer players - Zak, Rob, and Jen - each with their own play style and personality.
The Game
Hearts is played with a standard deck across four hands, with players trying to avoid taking trick points - every heart and the dreaded Queen of Spades. Take all the point cards in a single hand and you instead shoot the moon, sticking your opponents with the score.
Freeverse Treatment
Developed by Ian Lynch Smith and published by Freeverse, the title leans into character: animated portraits react to play, table chatter rolls between hands, and the interface stays out of the way of the cards.
Plug-in Players
The companion plug-in distributed in this archive adds three alternate opponents - Rex, Elizabeth, and Louis - that drop into the game folder and replace or supplement the stock trio for variety.
System Support
Hearts Deluxe runs across System 7.0 through Mac OS 8.1 on 68k Macs, making it one of the era's most accessible polished card games.
